I just got Norton and it's resource hungry. It slowed my computer down.
What do you prefer in a Firewall and Anti Virus program?
Have you noticed if they're effective or not?
What else have you tried and discarded?
How else do you keep your computer clean?

I just have some AV program. I think it's Norton... how fast is your computer?

I don't like firewall programs. I like the hardware kind. Only way to go. And yes, they're generally effective.

Spybot Search and Destroy. Only way to go.

I have a firewall hardware and software.I have McAfee(I swear I hate it)and it does work, but takes up memory fast also. From what I hear, not as fast as Norton but I don't have much experience with Norton.PK is right though, SpyBot Search and Destroy is a must have. Also, what works really well, is Ad-Aware.If you use Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware together you have one of the ultimate anti-spyware programs.Spybot misses a lot of things that Ad-Aware picks up and vice-versa.
Edit:If you want to know how I know this, take a wild guess.
Also my planetside outfit has a tech support forum and we have some guys that a really good with computers
If something comes up that nobody here can answer after a while I'll go ahead and ask about it there.

I use Adaware for Spyware. McAfee for the rest. Adaware works wonders. Spybot=evil! I download it, and everything I worked hard to delete came right back on!

I now use both Adaware and Spybot. Now that I use both, my Internet speed has gone up 300%(guestimate)!

I lied. ATLEAST 500% FASTER!

I just use the built-in Windows XP firewall and don't use a AV program; Spybot and Ad-Aware are more than enough for that. I don't really notice any performance boost at all, but it's just for a little peace of mind.

As for other techniques, I don't install things in general. The games I play only need the core application, which I'm pretty sure isn't malware, and ROM files which cannot be malignant.

Every now and then, I also check up on my Task Manager to make sure unknown resident programs are running without my knowledge.

I'm very satisfied with Norton Internet Security.

I got Norton free with my laptop and its pretty sweet. Not a single pop-up plus full control over which programs on my comp. can access the net.
