I desided to use 2000 but I don't know how to place my character on the field and I don't know how to make an event trigger by examinig something.

Edit: nevermind, I got my test rpg to work and its alright. It only lasts about 5 min. though. That could be explained with the fact that I only worked on it for an hour.

Arrow

I haven't really used anything other than RM2k (but I'm pretty darn experienced with it). I only tried out RM2k3 and RMXP a little bit.

RM2k3 seemed like a lot more work for me (getting new hero sprites for battle, etc), so I didn't consider transferring over my game to the new version. RMXP looks nicer, but lags on my system.

A little tip for anyone testing their games; hold down the CTRL key while walking, and you can walk through stuff you normally couldn't. (Of course, when you publish the game, this feature is removed). Another key brings up the variable list, where you can modify all of the custom variables you have.

I finished my second game. It is a sequel to my first one. Its still a little short, like 10-15 min.......or lower. probly. If you want it(although it kinda sucks.... Its decent to waste 10 min. of your life.... I think.... maybe not) You will have to tell me how to upload it some place(or something) becouse I don't have my own website to put it on(Cry....).

If you're looking for tips with RM2k, try this site: http://rpgmaker2000.narod.ru/

It's run by that hacker who hacked RM2k into English; it has a bunch of tutorials and tips submitted by other people. Personally, I've adapted stuff for a Scan skill, Steal skill, an NPC that shadows you, and a monster-repel item. There's also some other stuff; graphics packs, sounds, and a fix for the Enter Hero's Name command.

Be prepared to wait a million years for the page to load.

2. It didn't take that long(computer conection decent)
3. I was talking about how to upload it to a site and where to upload it.
4. I recently got 2003 but Every time I test my test game, when I go to battle, it says Im trying to upload a nonexistant monster. Do you have the answer to this problem?

3. No idea where to get free space. I have webspace that came with my ISP (affiliated with stupid Geocities) and another webspace from my university, so I use those. I have a friend who, like, owns the internet, but I didn't want to bother him about it.

4. Again, little idea. Could be as MasaHiro says; you have a monster battle, but the monsters in the battle are no longer in the database. Open up the database and try a test battle to make sure.

I started to use it, it is really really good. It is awesome how you can customize all of the battle features and terrain.

I use the XP version though.

XP is decent, but I prefer 2k3.

I gave up on the newer versons and I think I will just use 2000. its easier, less work, less confusing. Also I just finished part3 to last quest(3rd instalment to the games I have been working on. first was the test game, the game that I posted about not too long ago, and now this one.)

These are the ratings for my games... they might be higher than they should be becouse I made them but I don't think Im giving them extra credit.... am I?

Test game(part1) 5/10. decent but nothing special.
last quest(part 2) 6/10. I used alot more of what I could with the system.
Last quest3(part 3) 8/10. Fun, a little challenging, but short. Also used even more of my tools. though the only reason why it is challenging is blamed on the first boss and last. The first boss I ahd to wait till I was lvl 4 to beat.(there are only 6 lvls in it..... thats how short it is) and the last boss, I was At lvl 6 but he beat me half the time... also had most of the uber equiptment.

Though I really wish there was a way to at least share part3.... I thought It was awsome.

I love making the custom animation for the moves. I have awesome ideas for the moves. I love how you can make the skill system and everything. It is gonna take me forever but when it is done I am going post it here.

1. I usually start by making the characters.

2. I have my own website where there is a link to my 3 games so far. You don't have to download Last Quest1 though. It doesn't add much to the story line. well here is the link to my website. http://www.freewebs.com/danielnecromancer/index.htm

3. Please don't bug me about how bad the website is. I have had it for less then 24 hours. Also this is my first website.

Arrow This may not be coherent.

Install the editor and run it. I suggest you make a throwaway game first; make some objects like a treasure chest that gives you an item, a door that teleports you to another map, a couple of NPCs that talk to you, etc. Get a feel for all of the commands you can script.

If you're using RM2k, I suggest you plan out your items and how many you're going to need and in what order. In your inventory screen in the game, they're arrange as in the database, and it's a bother to rearrange them in the editor once you have an established game in development. This includes potions, weapons, armour, and key items.

There's a few things I remember from my own game. These are from RM2k, but I'm sure it'll transfer over.
  • Use \n[0] to display the hero's name in text boxes. This makes it easy to change your hero's name and not have to change every textbox in the game. You can also use it for other stuff, like town names, by creating a dummy hero and naming it with the desired name (substitue the number '0' above with the hero's number)
  • In general, the \x sequence in textboxes is pretty cool. Replace \x with various characters for various characters and effects (check the help file). If you're adept, you can alter them to display custom characters (I made one character for each type of item).
  • If you're going to have special battle scripts/commands (scan, steal, etc), I recommend scripting them early on, so you can just copy and paste it into other battle groups. Try to do it before you create all of the monster groups.
  • Think up game-wide things early in your development of your 'real' game. In my game, I wanted a running count of treasure chests found, but I had fifty-odd treasure chests already placed. I had to go and modify each chest to increment a counter, when I could have designed it in my template chest event in the first place.
  • I had a small common event that made my character blink every thirty seconds or so. It was cute.
  • F9 brings up switches and variable control panel during test play. I had a common event which activated off a switch to give me money, so I could properly test the game.
  • If you can afford the time, I recommend you plan your game. Think up plots, draw out rough maps, etc. Though I found it fun to design-as-I-go, I really could've saved some time by thinking it out first.
  • Understand your characters before you write their dialogue; in addition to whatever personality quirks you give them, remember that a deeper character wants something. If you can't find a motive for them to do the things you want them to do (like, a good motive), the characters will seem disconnected.
  • I always carried with me a small notebook where I could write down inspiring things such as names, or work out statistics or item/monster placement
  • When I finished my game, the latter part was much better than the first part. In the time it took to finish the game, I've matured a bit and gained a lot of experience with the engine. Look back and make changes.
  • I had trouble finishing the game; I wanted to add this and this here, or tweak this thing here, or update a custom sprite there. Just one last playthrough for balance issues, etc.

Right now I am not using characters made by me. I am using characters made by them but this is only for now in my testing phase.

I do not have a good storyline yet but I will come up with something.....

I am a good writer after all.

I tryed to find my file I cannot find it anywhere.

How do you save the files?
