How do you trade Pokemon on DS globally?

I have a Pokemon Platinum, but I admit I have really no idea how global trading works, I mean the DS system does have that, does it not? Where you can trade Pokemon from around the globe? But how do you do that? I admit I have obsolutely no idea how to do that, and there are a couple Pokemon I want that I would need to trade for but don't know anyone in my immedate area that play the game as well.

^ Umm . . . I mean if you had and I wanted to trade, how would we do that. I don't know what the difference is between them.
