If you're 42 years old competing against 15 year olds, at least get in the top 8 Judd.

But seriously, these prizes aren't too great. They're fun but nothing worth getting all pumped up over. I probably wouldn't even bother competing.

From what I've gathered, the national event was a great way to meet other Pokemon enthusiast around the country, and had I been able to qualify at the Newark regional I would have went and challenged them all. Judd, like myself, also is a longtime member of smogon, and we're both in our 40s and can still pwn other teens like they were just standing still.

Well, I was more disappointed that the older guy didn't even make the top 8. I'm older than most of the participants too so I'd be disappointed in myself if I didn't earn a prize competing against them.

Age doesn't really mean anything. Some of these younger guys are just as 'talented' as the older guys.

To play with VGC format, the rules for 2010 follow the Pokemon Communication Club Colosseum, battle for two, flat battle, GS cup where it's double battle, those over level 50 are autoleveled back down to 50 and up to 2 special pokemon can be used (mewtwo, ho-oh, lugia, kyogre, groudon, rayquaza, dialga, palkia or giratina). The rules in past years were different in that pokemon could not be over level 50 nor were those special pokemon allowed, and there was this lottery method that chose whom can play. This year was different in that in a US regional up to 768 can participate on a first come first serve basis as only the Newark, NJ regional was filled up and I was smart enough to at least get there at a reasonable early time so I could assure myself would participate.

Examples of how VGC was played can be seen in my youtube videos from a smogon wifi tournament that took place back in February and March this year as I managed to get runner-up as some of my opponents were prominent on the VGC scene including the one that was runner-up at the Nationals this year:
