EDIT: I refuse to judge a President I have not lived through. I have no clue what the mainstream was then, or what I would have thought, only what the textbooks say everything is. Check out Berlin's Gunjin Information. [ January 24, 2005, 08:20 PM: Message edited by: Star Scott Butcher ] |

In addition to being the man responsible for the Japanese American Internment Camps, there's also his failed court stacking plan, which managed to intimidate the Supreme Court into declaring his blatantly illegal programs constitutional. | |

A big war breaking out during your administration doesn't necessarily make you a great president on the whole. As for the Great Depression, the way he "handled" that is the biggest stain on his administration. [ January 24, 2005, 09:29 PM: Message edited by: Philip55 ] |

Was it really the TVA and the CCC and the rest of the alphabet soup that got us out of the depression? No. Those programs were like Black Mage trying to use his dagger on Fighter's armour. The difference between Hoover and Roosevelt with regards to the Great Depression was that Hoover thought the problem would resolve itself a la the many financial panics of the 19th century; this was perceived as him flailing around doing nothing. Roosevelt made programs that amounted to a fraction of a percent improvement; he was seen as doing something. The question boils down to whether or not perception is more important than effect. Bill Clinton would say the former is better. George Bush would say the opposite. |

WPA projects helped construct buildings (such as colleges and schools, bridges, dams, and others). It gave people jobs, and provided a sense of stability for the public as well as improved the infastructure of the country. |

The TVA was perhaps the best of all those projects, much needed. But considering successes like those were far and few between... |

The fact is, JFK's assassination turned him into a martyr for the left wing. Thus, every conceivable praise is heaped upon what was, in actuality, a thoroughly mediocre president. I think that is a pretty good summation of that situation. And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

Kennedy may have been a great guy and everything, but I didn't really find anything that great in his presidency to brag about. There were much better presidents than JFK anyway. TR kicks inconcievibly more amounts of ass than JFK ever did, for example. Oh, and for my least favorite...I'm gonna have to go with Andrew Jackson on this one. They went to Oklahoma along the Trail of Tears, a journey that ended up killing a lot of the migrating Indians, not to mention the fact that various tribes were removed from their homelands in the first place. And while the Trail of Tears was beyond horrible, you can hardly put all of the blame on Jackson. At the time, the entire country didn't give a damn about the Native Americans. It was popular opinion at the time to send them west, I believe. It's like blaming one person for slavery. So yeah, he's a bum for going ahead and doing it, but don't be so hard on him. If Jackson didn't send the Indians out west, someone else would have done it sooner or later. In terms of how we treated the Native Americans over the course of history, we simply suck as a whole.-jay [ January 25, 2005, 08:29 PM: Message edited by: Perrin Aybara ] |
