Interesting idea, but that would just get that student ragged on at school, the only thing you can do is sit down and have a talk about it all. Let it all out, what can happen, how it happens, all that, and just let the child go from there.

If you ask me, there should be two "talks"

Yeah, chastity accessories of any sort seem like more harm than help.
What teenagers need to do is stop being stupid. That's when those percentages are gonna start shifting.

Besides, like I've said many a time before, abstinence is stinking easy.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I think that the "ragging on" that people do will be less than you think. A chastity ring is more symbolic than anything, and really it could be just about any ring to be quite honest.

However, I think there are more effective ways of doing it; however, I don't think this can hurt in any way. It just may not help.

Well yeah, you are right. It depends, if the "ragger" knows about them, then yeah, they will more than likely make fun of the abstinee; however if the child knows none, then nothing will take place.

In other words, we devise a secret underground society of abstinees and.... oh, sorry, I'll stop.

Eek, man, about that last paragraph. 88% chance of breaking an abstinence vow, 20% less likely to use a condom when you do. Clearly abstinence-only education is the way to go.

I don't think anyone would get ragged on either. Seems to me that the only place where you're likely to see a chastity ring would be in the Bible Belt, or anyway a very traditional community where chastity is already a big thing. Even so, I've never heard of a teenager getting ragged on for abstinence anyway.

Someone else can come along and wallop me with contrary statistics if they have them, though.

Columbia University researchers conducted a study with 12,000 teenagers and found that a whopping 88 percent of those who made a chastity vow did have sex before marriage and were 20 percent less likely to use a condom than teens who hadn't taken the pledge.
It's still a joke. Nobody takes crap like that seriously. It's on the same line as those rubber bracelets that everyone wears now, those magnetic ribbons that people stick all over their vehicles, or when everyone and their grandmother stuck made-in-china-american flags on everything.

Education works, not some stupid trinket. This is like saying "MAYBE IF WE GIVE KIDS DARE SHIRTS INSTEAD OF PUTTING THEM IN AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM, THEY'LL STAY OFF DRUGS!" I know more people who wear DARE shirts specifically to smoke pot than anything else because of the inherant irony of the situation.

Sex is something that should be educated, and yes the education should cover abstinance. However, it should also explain other aspects of it, such as condom and contraceptive use just as heavily.
