But they do have those casinos and duty-free smokes. Lucky them. The US government committed genocide against the Native Americans...thats the LEAST we can give them.
The Indians on reservations aren't as mistreated as a lot of people make them out to be. A lot of them draw $1,500+ a month in welfare money in addition to WIC, food stamps, and just about every other form of aid availiable. Hell, my college had something like 600 students at the beginning of the semester; PELL payouts came around and enrollment is now at about 400. Also, while I can't speak for other reservations, the Blackfeet rez isn't a dumping ground for nuclear waste.

As far as the genocide thing, there was wrong on both sides. It was wrong for the U.S. cavalry to charge in and massacre Indians. It was also wrong for the Indians to kill whites and fight with other Indian tribes.

My posts regarding Indians may make me sound racist, but I am anything but racist toward Indians. I've lived right off the Blackfeet reservation my entire life and I really like the Blackfeet people. They treat me well and I always know where I stand with them. One of my best friends is a Blackfeet Indian. What I dislike is not the people, but the "world owes me a livin'" mentality that a lot of them have bought into. I'm sorry about what happened to them 75+ years ago, but I personally had nothing to do with the way they were treated. As such, I should not have to make "payments" or anything else to them because their ancestors were mistreated by the whites. It's in the past. We should never forget about what happened in the past, but with our common identity as Americans we should be able to move on to the future.

Uh... it was wrong of them to fight with other Indian tribes? First of all, that's irrelevant; second of all, take a European history course, it was nothing compared to what Europe did to itself, let alone the rest of the world. And you can't really blame the natives for fighting (trying to, at least) to protect lands that had been theirs for thousands of years. We basically just said, okay, get out of the way, America's coming-- it's our manifest destiny! There's no way that the natives were in the wrong just for protecting themselves and their lands.

Slaughtering innocent people has never been and never will be justifiable, no matter who did it. Wrong is wrong. It was wrong for the whites to charge into Indian camps and kill the Indians there. It was wrong for the Indians to attack the white settlements and kill the people living there.

Well...

First off, I wouldn't try and compare the Nazis with the natives. Considering that whites were the 'invading' force, and that the natives were killed, driven from their ancestral lands, and generally screwed over far worse than the whites, natives killing whites seems much more similar to the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw ghetto.

Doesn't excuse killing women or children though.
