As of this post I have not read the whole topic. In response to Ace's post that went something like, "We say helping old ladies across the street is good (for society). We say murdering little old ladies is bad (for society).": Obviously killing old ladies left and right is bad for society. Killing one hermited old lady, however, does nothing to society. No one knows she's dead because no one (except the murderer) knew she was alive. Her murder wasn't bad for society, but it was still bad, wasn't it? "Life or death" dilemmas have definite, universal, and usually obvious answers. But small temptations - "Should I eat that last piece of cake even though it's bad for me and I've already had three and my little sister has had none?" - aren't worth hours of moral bellyaching.
