The Hebrews did NOT commit genocide against most of the people there, although genocide was extremely common practice back than and would remain so for thousands of years. Now I shall quote the bible to you. You said ...do not leave alive anything that breaths. Completely destroy them...as the Lord your God has commanded you..." Deuteronomy 20:16 But it actually reads, and from the part before it: Deuteronomy 20: 10 to 16 “When you approach a city to fight against it, you must make an offer of peace. If it accepts your offer of peace and opens [its gates] to you, all the people found in it will become forced laborers for you and serve you. However, if it does not make peace with you but wages war against you, lay siege to it. When the Lord your God hands it over to you, you must strike down all its males with the sword. But you may take the women, children, animals, and whatever else is in the city-all its spoils- as plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the Lord your God has given you. This is how you are to treat all the cities that are far away from you and are not among the cities of these nations. However, you must not let any living thing survive among the cities of these people the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance." Yes, the Caanites and a few other smaller civilizations were supposedly put to the sword. But that was EXTREMELY common back than, and what was more common, was that the majority of cities they conquered, the males were killed and the women and children were kept alive for slaves and marriage, etc. It was a very common practice and can you blame God if he wanted those that would lead his people astray dead? Those people were doing wrong in God's eyes and God is a wrathful God as he should be. If you do wrong, you should be punished. He wanted them destroyed because they would lead his people away from them, or destroy his people. So goes the fact of life. |
