I am appalled and embarrassed

STLtoday - Washington U. takes heat about honoring Schlafly

It's disgusting that my school will be honoring someone as intolerant and bigoted as Phyllis Schlafly at my graduation. I plan on standing up and turning my back to her as she gets her award because she is just a horrible woman. And shame on my school for letting her talk.

For the stuff that she's done, Google her. -CSM

Phyllis Schlafly is a conservative activist who opposes women's rights. She thinks women should not be allowed to hold jobs or serve in the army, and she says things that if women marry they are subservient to their husbands. She was also affiliated with the Daughters of the American Revolution, a group that was racist until 1984, for a very long time. I don't want my school honoring someone like that. -CSM

I know who Phyllis Schlafly is. I was more asking why you're acting like they were offering an honorary doctorate to Attila the Hun.

Oh, and nice job posting 'information' about her, there. Have you actually read any of her books?

Boo: master of the ninja edit.

So, CSM, for what reason are they honoring her, exactly?

^^There it is.

Oh, and maybe I'm just spineless, but I could never get up and face away from someone receiving any kind of honorary anything just because I disagree with them. It's kind of small.

(EDIT:^Feh. Spoken like someone whose brain isn't nice enough to suggest better ways of phrasing things after the fact, to make up for the fact that it couldn't be bothered to do so beforehand.)

^^I don't know. They want to honor controversial figures, especially Republicans. They had Mike Huckabee AND Alberto Gonzales invited to speak over the past two years, but when Obama asked if he could come speak the university declined to have him. -CSM

I mean, I really don't see how anyone can defend marital rape. Schlafly condones it and thinks there ought to be laws banning women from the army, the fire departments, and construction work. -CSM

She's an alumn. Same thing as if Coulter spoke at Cornell or U of M.

^And I bet the students at Cornell or Michigan would protest on a much larger scale than we are. Already there are nearly 2,000 of us protesting, including faculty members. -CSM

Aren't universities supposed to be centers of discourse and multiple ideas?

Maybe women should be banned from public speaking too. Oh, wait......

I guess she can have her own opinions, even if it leads to some contradictions on her part. The college honoring her doesn't mean much, and I doubt she will make many converts there. And if she does, whatever.

Speaking of giving Attila the Hun an honorary doctorate, what is so wrong with that?
