Palin leaves open option of war with Russia

Palin leaves open option of war with Russia - Yahoo! News

Quote:
Palin told Charles Gibson of ABC News that she'd favor including Georgia and Ukraine, both former Soviet republics, in NATO despite opposition by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Asked whether the United States would have to go to war with Russia if it invaded Georgia, and the country was part of NATO, Palin said: "Perhaps so."
I take it there's no longer any option for our government to solve problems abroad other than to send in tanks and soldiers.

I'd leave war with Russia open as an option as well. NATO has absolutely no point if a potential aggressor isn't facing massive retaliation from the rest of NATO.

It sounds ridiculous. Iraq and Afghanistan are enough right now as it is, and those are already a srain on resources and manpower. Russia is enough to actually be a threat, and the US has never actually went to war with a country that could threaten the US itself since WWII.

We've had/used any other option?

Read the question again. If Georgia and the Ukraine were hypothetically part of NATO, would she favor retaliation if Russia invaded a NATO member. If the answer isn't automatically yes, disband NATO because there's absolutely no point to it existing. The entire point of the NATO pact is so member states are less likely to get invaded due to the massive retaliation from the rest of the organization. There are valid points to criticize Palin, but this isn't one of them.

If we retaliate, we get a war between nuclear powers, which we have managed to avoid so far and had better avoid. If we didn't retaliate, then there is no point of the organization. Either way is bad. And, we could not even manage a war with Russia right now if we did retaliate.

There's also the other question: would Russia have invaded in the first place if Georgia were part of NATO? That's the problem with the hypothetical. Somehow, I don't see Russia striking a NATO member.

Leaving an option open =/= aggression

I agree with Lurch (lolwut) that the whole point of NATO as a defensive pact dies if you don't defend the other people in the pact.
