Obama as the New President

I'm surprised there isn't a topic already.

Anyway, what're your opinions on the 44th? I completely support him, but I'm curious about the rest of the forum. Comments about the inauguration are welcome too.

Hmm, too early to say for me.

Yesterday, they played the inauguration in school, but I didn't get to see it all. I was waiting to get home to see the recap, anyways.

Also, you know how at the beginning of each new year you'll write your dates as "XX-XX-2008" instead of "XX-XX-2009" or whatever year it is? I've been doing the same thing here. I was ten when Bush entered office, so this is the first real transition of power I've experienced.

At work, we were watching the inauguration just before lunch. There was one TV which a small crowd were standing around watching. One guy walked up to us and said "geez, it's like you've never seen a black president before."

That's my inauguration anecdote.

His speech was amazing - seriously gave me chills. Amazing rhetoric. I'm very optimistic - of course, I realize that there are some ridiculous expectations of him, but as long as he gets the ball rolling in terms of getting the country back on track, I think he'll do well. It'll take several years for the economy to recover, so people shouldn't expect all to be well immediately, but I think he will definitely do great things.

Having hope makes a big difference. I am much prouder of the US for electing someone who seems to have realistic sympathies with the majority.

That being said, he's really just a new scapegoat. The president does not control the economy.

He can't fix what's been done in 4 years, but as ZG stated, he can get things rolling, and that's all I expect. I honestly think McCain would've dug bigger holes focusing on the wrong ****.

Yeah, the president certainly has the ability to approve and introduce policies that will benefit the country. I don't think Dems or Republicans are willing to do what's really necessary to keep the economy focused internally, though. The type of tariffs they'd have to enact would visibly hurt the country before they started to do what the west needs.

Frankly, the only thing wrong with the speech was he forgot to mention that we need to build rail and transit in the country.

But beyond that, the speech, and the whole occasion reminded me why I love America so much. It brought back the traditional America I always believed in: the land of milk and honey, the land where people from all over the world come to make a better life for themselves, and to contribute to America's culture, rather than the land of hockey moms and Joe Sixpacks Palin always spoke about.

Obama knew that he can't push an agenda to start his presidency, and he implied that the best government is "smart government," neither big nor small. He said that we all need to work together to solve the problems facing our country, and the entire world.

I'm also very proud of the fact that his first executive order is to shut down Gitmo. -CSM

I'm about as excited as I am for Republicans becoming prez: not very.

The two major parties are full of lies and corruption. It's time for real change - third-party change.

does not mesh with this:

Dumping money into systems that cannot break even, let alone profit doesn't seem like the proper allocations of resources in a recession.

and if a 3rd party ever gets control of power, they'll go "corrupt" as well.

There are corrupt people within EVERY party, but since two are dominant, of course those are going to be seen as the most corrupt.

Don't like what's going on? Get involved. That goes for everyone.

Just any third party? Because I doubt the Fascist Party or Prohibition Party are going to help anything right now.

While yes, a rail-transit is a fantastic idea, it's far from the top of Obama's "To Do" list.

I'm proud to be an American, but not so proud to be in this family.

My mom keeps saying things like "Obama is only president because he's black" and "Gitmos closed so all the bad guys are out and they're gonna kill us with terrorist attacks"

Also, not so proud to be a Detroiter, with FRONT PAGE NEWS of LINCOLN AND OBAMA ATE THE SAME FOOD OBVIOUSLY THEY ARE THE SAME

^I'm from a smaller town in Texas. We get little to nothing besides that. I've heard stuff like that since McCain even announced his candidacy.

Public transport isn't supposed to profit. It's supposed to create jobs and make people's lives easier. It's smart investment. Transit and transit-oriented development only makes society better. -CSM
