The Iran crisis topic

I'm sure you now know what's going on: Ahmadinejad claimed a landslide victory in an election where polls leading up to it were neck and neck. What are your thoughts?

I think the election was a fraud, and I'm not surprised because the Ayatollahs are really who controls Iran. Although somehow I wonder how much longer because every day I hear stories about the clergy becoming more moderate.

I'm especially worried because Ahmadinejad and his allies have been running over Moussavi's supporters in their cars and the government apparently photoshopped an Ahmadinejad rally to make it look like there were more people than there actually were. -CSM

I think what we have here is a dictatorship trying to disguise itself as a democracy.

Yeah, there's something up with this election. And I don't know how Iran will take all of this, whether the government will be forced to make change, or if Tehran will become the new Tiananmen Square.

If an Tiananmen-type event were to occur, the Iranian government would receive a much greater backlash than the PRC did.

Eh, don't be too sure. There isn't a whole lot of information available, as reporters have been prohibited from reporting while in the country. Most of the news is coming from YouTube videos and Iranian tweeters, and even then you have to be careful because a lot of faux accounts are being made with false reports about what's going on.

^My point was, the only truly reliable information is being tainted by people trying to interfere.

All I know about the Iran crisis is that I'm not sure how much I should believe of what is being fed. I think we're getting a much bigger picture on this story than we were a few years back during the whole Hugo Chavez fiasco, in which the US media covered quite a bit of the demonstrations against Chavez - even though there were even larger demonstrations in support of him.

US has to be careful here. They don't need to provide Ahmadinejad with a good excuse to call the opposition a part of some western force to be opposed by "patriotic" Iranians.

Well, it had to have been rigged. I mean, it's impossible for him to win about a day before the results!

So, this is still going on, and it's gotten pretty big, seeing as it's dominating all other international news. Even family members of the country's clerics have been arrested in connections to the protests. Last time I checked, the official death count is around 13, but even that could be really low.

If you turn on CNN or anything right now, you're guaranteed to see coverage of the crisis, along with graphic video and images taken by amateurs and given to outside news sources, since Iran is currently in a major media blackout issued by the government. This is all still going on.

Since the Ayatollah has all the real power, what does it matter if it was rigged or not?

YouTube - citizentube's Channel

Apparently, youtube has set up a channel where individuals can post footage of what's going on. Frightening stuff.

I honestly believe the election was rigged. The numbers just don't add up. Several different sources(Washington Post, Times, etc) have had political scientists and statitistcians analyze the number, and it was far less than 1% likelihood that the elections were truly fair.

Also, I have talked to several people in Iran, via Twitter, as well as followed what has happened via Twitter, and no government would do what Iran is doing if the elections are true and fair.
