New Tobacco Regulation law

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama , who still struggles with his own addiction to cigarettes, on Monday signed into law the most sweeping federal anti-tobacco legislation to pass Congress in decades.

The law gives the Food and Drug Administration broad authority to regulate the marketing and manufacture of tobacco products. It bans fruit- and spice-flavored cigarettes, slaps expansive new warnings on packages and gets rid of the monikers "light" and "low-tar."

It also allows the FDA to order manufacturers to reduce — though not eliminate — the amount of the addictive chemical nicotine that's in cigarettes...

Hope none of you like clove cigarettes. I don't smoke, but I tend to be pretty libertarian about this sort of issue.

I heard somebody mention it during election time being like "YEAH MCCAIN MIGHT DIE FROM OLD AGE BUT OBAMA SMOKES SO THERE"

Also, I don't mind regulating tobacco, I'm just hoping that It'll still be legal to smoke my lettuce.

.

Hi.

Actually , it was that he was an extremely heavy smoker, and that he was at a huge risk of cancer.

I was mainly trying to keep people from discrimitely voting against McCain over his age.

^It's not much of an argument. I don't know how much he smokes, but even if Obama ended up with cancer he'd be likely to survive his term. And in the unlikely event that he didn't, he wasn't going to leave us with Palin.

I see this as the government not minding its own business, as usual.

^^Yeah, I think a lot of people were voting based on the veeps this time. Biden's a blowhard, but he's a sane blowhard.

I remember seeing a lot of photos of Obama smoking last year. Or maybe just the same photo a lot of times.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I don't agree with banning flavoured cigarettes, but the rest is pretty good.

Now hear is my question. With this new regulation, what's going to happen to all the employees working in the tobacco industry.

^ nothing's going to happen to the employees directly (they may lose profits if their big sellers were the flavored cigarettes and get laid off). They're still allowed to sell non-flavored cigarettes. And the labeling isn't gonna do ****. Smokers already know they're at a higher risk of cancer, but they do it anyway.

It seems aimed at preventing new smokers rather than removing old ones anyway.

Whatever it takes to stop smoking in public, I'll support. Normally I take a liberatarian position on drugs, but when you lived in Missouri for four years and you couldn't see in practically ANY bar (and got home with a headache due to the smoke), you start to want to stop it. -CSM

I feel that anyone with a libertarian stance on drugs should really take a look at Chinese History, specifically the 1800's.

What if I want to smoke hookah in private? Seems pretty fascist to me.

I don't have a libertarian stance on all drugs, so maybe this doesn't apply to me, but would you mind saving me some time?

Opium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Opium Wars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically, drugs were coming to China from Britain, and turning it into a den of drug abuse and nonproductivity. It was one of the main factors leading to the end of the Chinese dynasties in the 19th century.

Aside from the simple fact that drinking in bars is inherently more dangerous to your health than second hand smoke, I don't buy into smoking bans for health because there are far worse offenders in the air that get a free pass.
