TFNTP: Bring your gun to church day

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/26/us/26guns.html?_r=1

He says "Not every Christian denomination is pacifist." True, but a significant majority of mainstream Christian denominations only bless a war if it's to protect innocent life rather than national interests, and they certainly don't support toting your gun around. Because this image is a complete lie:

Aw, from the thread title, I thought it would be a gun collection or something cool like that.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Interesting how condoms and sponges (aka things that save lives) aren't allowed in churches, but guns (things that destroy lives) are. That sounds eerily similar to a terrorist training madrassa. -CSM

Lo res as it is, I will not pass any chance to post sniperjesus.
But really, look at the article location. Kentucky pride and gun enthusiasm supersede any church ideals.

^^ Maybe I'm just out of it, but I don't see how condoms and sponges save lives. Maybe... improve the quality?

Also, why are you all still posting in this thread? ZG finished it.

No, what's interesting is how some people think with their emotions rather than with their brain.

Ever hear of Jeanne Assam? She used her personally owned firearm to stop an attack on the New Life Church in Colorado Springs. Who knows how many lives she saved? Maybe one, maybe none, maybe fifty or more?

Perhaps you'll find this interesting: Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year—or about 6,850 times a day.1 This means that each year, firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives. Source: GUN CONTROL FACT-SHEET (2004)

Gun control is one of my biggest pet peeves. Firearms have no control over who uses them. Yeah, there are a lot of *******s out their who abuse guns, but I'm not one of them. The vast majority of this country's 70-80 million gun owners are law-abiding.

I'll leave you with this --- "Gun control: the belief that a woman found in an alley raped and strangled with her own pantyhose is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining how her attacker got those fatal bullet wounds."

Eh. Nothing makes me wonder more than religious sub-groups.

They can believe that the bible is a cookbook, and that Jesus loved guns 1000+ years before they were invented.

AGH! The horror! I don't even go to church! Why did I even reply to this topic? Just one thing, guns weren't invented until the Europeans came over. Social Studies, children. Learn. It's not like Jesus used guns to kill animals! Well, possibly he did. Also, he could've saved himself from the Romans if he had a gun like that. Christians, please, use your brains. This isn't rocket science! I don't even GO to church. I believe in God, but I don't go to church!

Here is a partial list of shootings that have occurred in religious settings.

Quote:
Los Angeles Jewish Community Center shooting - August 1999

Seattle Jewish Federation shooting - July 2006

Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church shooting - July 2008

Colorado YWAM and New Life Church shootings - December 2007

Missouri Micronesian church shooting - August 2007

Moscow (Idaho) Presbyterian Church shooting -May 2007

Jesus Christ Church shooting - May 2006

Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church shooting - February 2006

Living Church of God shooting - March 2005

Turner Monumental AME Church shooting - October 2003

Wedgewood Baptist Church shooting - September 1999

Reformation Lutheran Church shooting - May 2009
Unfortunately, our places of worship are not exempt from violence. Congregants need to be able to defend themselves. The best way to do that is to allow law-abiding congregants the option of carrying concealed firearms.

Right, so should law abiding students be able to bring guns to school? I mean, you know, to protect themselves from school shootings.

America is backward as hell.

In high schools, probably not. I mean, I oppose all gun control in principal, but I'll admit that arming a 14 year old kid is asking for trouble. However, I have no problem with armed teachers and administrators.

I do support concealed carry in a college setting. Utah has allowed concealed carry on campus for years and it seems to work well.

I think concealed carry is a great thing. Have you ever met a violent criminal who gave a **** about what the law says? Mmmmm...didn't think so. If he did, he wouldn't be a criminal.

Montana has some of the most relaxed gun laws in the nation. Everybody has a gun in this state. Even my Marxist leaning neighbor. It's funny how we have more guns per capital than most other states and some of the lowest violent crime rates.

Perhaps somebody who supports gun control will tell me why the belief that a woman found in an alley raped and strangled with her own pantyhose is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining how her attacker got those fatal bullet wounds? Nobody has ever answered this question to my satisfaction.

The "America is backward is hell" comment is more a comparison of the gun-related deaths of the United States with other similar countries:

United States:
Gun-Related Deaths: 9,369
Overall population: Approx. 300 million

Canada
Gun Related Deaths: 144
Overall population: Approx. 30 Million

Japan
Gun Related Deaths: 47
Overall Population: Approx. 130 Million

United Kingdom
Gun Related Deaths: 14
Overall Population: Approx. 60 Million

(Source)

It has more to do with overall culture than gun control. Canada has quite the arsenal among its population.

Holy Jesus. Look at South Africa, a country with stringent gun control laws. Who'd a thunk it would lead the world in murders committed with guns?

I actually can't really explain it, because I have no clue why, exactly, our gun-related deaths are so much higher per-capita than other countries that are similar socioeconomically. If I could tell you, I would.

I guess saying that it's "cultural" is a bit of a poor wording of the statement. Other countries have the same violent histories, movies, video games, TV shows, etc. that our culture has.

I think there are a multitude of factors that contribute to violent crime in America. However, I don't think gun ownership (or possession) is one of them in and of itself.
