Joe Arpaio....the time has come

I just read a very, very serious article in the New Yorker about a man who I think is just about the worst police commissioner in America. This man claims to be "America's toughest sheriff," but clearly he doesn't understand that you can be tough without being unfair.

This man is Joe Arpaio.

And he's not the sheriff of any dirtwater hicksville county. He is the sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. This is where Phoenix is, and I believe Phoenix passed Philly for 5th largest US city.

He claims to be just enforcing the law the way it was intended to be, but he openly brags about how he focuses on "things that will destroy America." He thinks these are illegal immigrants and drugs. Meanwhile, he does NEXT TO NOTHING on serious crimes such as burglary, rape, and murder.

He proudly boasts about his "Tent City" jail, where inmates are housed in outdoor tents in 135 degree weather. This jail, I believe, violates two constitutional amendments. The 8th amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, and Arpaio is exposing his prisoners to become great risks for skin cancer in that heat (this is something the media doesn't talk about; they mostly focus on his pink underwear/socks/handcuffs which are really just for self-gratification which, in my view, while absolutely disgusting, is nothing in comparison to exposing people to what could give them cancer).

Secondly, although he treats his prisoners with the utmost disgrace, and insists on treating them like criminals, the majority of his prisoners are not convicted criminals; they are being held and are awaiting trial, which means that, in the eyes of the law, and explicitly the 6th amendment (right to a speedy trial), they are innocent until proven guilty. And keep in mind most of these prisoners are illegal immigrants and drug addicts facing treatment that should be reserved for the worst convicted rapists and murderers, very few of whom are in Arpaio's jails. One of these people, Richard Post, was paralyzed from the waist down, and when he requested his required medical appliances, he was put into a restraint chair and pulled until he was paralyzed from the neck down. This all happened the night of his arrest (for possession of a small bit of pot, which carried a modest fine and community service, hardly worthy of being thrown in jail).

He has also attracted the support of neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. He says he's "honored" to be compared to these people, and actually posed with supporters who held the Confederate Flag, who later admitted to being "white nationalists" (the pc term for white supremacists), and gave a Hitler salute on camera.

And his deputies are making it a crime to have brown skin in a public place. He conducted a raid last year on the small town of Guadalupe, many of whose residents have lived in the same house for their entire lives (which means they're not illegal immigrants, in fact, many of them are Native Americans, meaning their clans got there before any of Arpaio's clan did). Here, his deputies looked for any excuse to arrest anyone, and even arrested people for "improper use of the horn" which anywhere else or by anyone else wouldn't be enforced at all. They conducted two raids on the town on consecutive days.

I could go on and on about Arpaio, but I just wanted to give you some of the stuff, particularly the stuff that's more serious that the media tends to avoid (then again, his deputies have in the passed harassed his critics).

You can read snippets of the article here; I read it in a magazine and was hoping I could share the whole article with you, but the New Yorker online is being dickish.... -CSM

Everyone knows that Harry Lee would beat the pants off him.

It takes a good sheriff to stay in office to over 20 years despite doing things that could be considered "racist".

I'm sure Lurch will come in and go "haha no" and shut me up though :/

^You should read the stuff his supporters write; he's effectively duped Phoenix and its suburbs. Of course many of them don't know about some of the stuff I just mentioned...but then again I'm probably wrong, considering someone bashed "crips" in a response to the Richard Post story which also included an endorsement for McCain for president. -CSM

He's located in a Red State. Many people actually don't mind what he does. That doesn't make it right.

Remind me never to come to Phoenix. I might get arrested for assault.

I also read that he loves the fact that law abiding citizens who are brown-skinned are afraid to even go to church. This man is sick. -CSM

^I've been in the party for about 2 years now; I just thought with this article now would be a good time to post about it. I don't want to randomly post about things and then have people come on as like "WTF is this all about?" -CSM

I'm not really heavily into politics or social issues, mostly because I would get depressed too easily if I payed much attention. In that respect, it's valid enough to bring it to our attention, because I wouldn't have gone out of my way to find it out myself.
