Eh, there's easily a subconcious level of racism active in the minds of anyone who would connect appearance with behavior.

I'd definitely say that race, though unconsciously, is playing some sort of factor in the hostility towards Obama. Perhaps it's just that my awareness of politics has grown, but NEVER has it been so bad, this anger directed towards a president and the party line divided in such a way. I don't think it's off-base to think that race is playing some sort of factor, especially when you have people who still believe he wasn't even born in this country or that he's a Muslim.

I don't think Joe Wilson is a racist, but I know a lot of his compatriots are:

If it looks like a racist (one of seven members in the SC assembly to vote to keep the Confederate flag) and talks like a racist (calling Strom Thurmond's illegitimate black daughter's claim to her paternity a "smear" and "unseemly," which given the circumstances are pure southern codewords)......

I thought this whole confederate flag issue was "We've been doing it for years, it's a tradition! We don't HAVE to make it associated with racism" though. Or at least some of it.

I can say that I seriously doubt it was fueled by racism.
You could be blind and see that.

Many Republicans are concerned, and frustrated on this matter.
I think that this frustration is why he had the outburst.
The claim that the outburst was fueled by racism seems absurd to me.

I tend to agree with Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, in the fact that it seems like they're going in to this, in order to hide something.
That's just what it seems like to me.

Do I think that he was correct in the way he showed his disapproval? No.
Do I think he owes another apology? No.

^^That's what most of it is, but not all of it.

Not when the state placed it on top of the capitol in 1962. That's just as blatant as a burning cross.

I still wonder why no one also seems to get that Wilson wasn't acting shocked because he dared say something negative about obama...it's because he flat-out interrupted him and insulted him.

But considering a politician is calling ANOTHER politician a liar...pot calling the kettle black, much?

Most of the Republicans were on their blackberries chatting during Obama's speech anyway. They are not interested in reforming health care at all. -CSM

This is an issue that can't really be summed up in a post, but I'll try it:

Racism is a feeling/idea/belief of superiority that is ultimately based off fear. If you fear something you don't know and you have the power to push it away, you will do whatever is necessary to keep that down. Now racism is no longer a prevalent thought, thankfully, but you still have people that are used to seeing a certain system (predominately white, or a white man in control, not to say they only want a white person in control, but to say that it has been the norm). Now you have a change (pun not intended) in your norm, now a man that is not of typical presidential stature is in charge. He is on the other side of your party line, so not only do you disagree with his policies, your way of thinking is confused because the standard has changed, so not only do you disagree with his policies, you disagree with HIM for interrupting and changing the standard.

I tried to make sense.

It's indirect racism, which we all do at times.

Eh some actually DO care.

But then again I don't have much credibility since I think people vying for congress should be forced to live 5-10 years on middle-class income working blue-collar jobs that can be shipped to India or Mexico at the drop of a hat with no access to their existing funds or insurance.

What a bunch of bull. Try flying the swastika in Germany, and saying that. What, that's different? They didn't force them into labor? Oh, they killed some of them. So no slaves ever died in slavery. I see your logic here.

Someone did that when my grandfather & My mom's family lived out there actually. it was an Asian dude and it was a Manji. Obviously they had none of that. (Especially since it was the 60s.)

This is what happens when you have an undying love for an such an absurdly shortsighted economic system like free market capitalism.
