| Senior Member | Gay marriage ads get similar and use fear. The same ineffective ad used in California is being used here in Maine. I am for equal rights and gay marriage (no i'm not gay but I support equal rights). I don't know where California's ad on youtube is but here's Maines 2 million dollar ad. Uhh what the ****? The lies in that ad make me upset too. That family didn't ask for the right to pull their kid out of class. They filed a class action suit against the school demanding millions of dollars in so called "damages". The lawsuit was dismissed because "diversity is a great landmark of our great nation". It's all a fear campaign. This question 1 campaign ISN'T ABOUT BEING ABLE TO TEACH GAY MARRIAGE IN CLASSROOMS BUT TO LEGALIZE GAY MARRIAGE FOR MAINE CITEZINS! Notice that they don't give you the name of the school that Charla Bansley (The lady in the anti-gay marriage ad for Maine). This is because she works at Calvary Chapel Christian School in Orrington and if they put that up there it would discredit what the fearmongerers are trying to push out. Calvary Chapel Christian School in Orrington is a ****ing private CHRISTIAN school!!!!!!! Does anyone get what I'm saying? It's come down to bringing a new law in to make gay marriage illegal and it is using LIES and DECEPTION. Last edited by Jesus; 10-22-2009 at 01:56 PM. | ||||||

My school never taught about marriage, for straights or gays. Funny that. | |

A few months ago I read that despite the anti-gays outspending the pro-gays by double, only $400 dollars of the anti-gay budget came from within Maine, whereas $80,000 of the pro-gay money came from within Maine. -CSM |

| Senior Member | ^And that is what upsets me the most. Note how the Maine Ad I posted at the beginning has the hurried panicky music and doesn't say anywhere that it will ban gay marriage. It's all deception by the anti-gay marriage people. |

Can't blame them, though, because they're not white. Wouldn't be politically correct. |

| Senior Member | ^Most of the people who are against gay marriage come from out of state sources and do everything in their power to strike fear in the public's eyes with propoganda and the sorts. And just because the state is heavily minority doesn't mean that they aren't against gay marriage. An equal amount of black people hate gay marriage just as much as the amount of white people. Race isn't an issue in this case. It's an issue of propoganda tactics to sway the vote. |

Most whites in the state actually voted NO. It was African-Americans and Hispanics, who tend to be socially conservative when it comes to abortion and gays, who came out and voted very heavily in favor of the amendment, enough to make a difference to have it pass. And the shocking thing about this is that social conservatives still want to cater to angry white men instead of reaching out to blacks and Hispanics. You'd think this would change their approach, but it hasn't. I don't blame any one group in particular other than NOM, who runs these deceptive attack ads (and is not aligned with any particular religious group), for passing the gay marriage ban in California. -CSM |

On a more serious note, I think it's so ridiculous that people are launching giant fear campaigns over this. Why can't we just let people marry whoever they want? I mean, it's like passing a law that people can only eat vanilla ice cream. All well and good for the people who like vanilla, but they don't have to force their choice on the people who enjoy chocolate. |

Now, I am aware that not all mormons want to smite the homosexuals or whatever [I know some pretty awesome and cool mormons], but it is true that the vast majority of the support and funds for Prop 8 in california came from this church and some of its members. I just think it's sad that ANY people will spend so much money to do nothing other than strip away the rights of someone else. WTF, man. |

I mean, people are barely able to feed their kids, and you're spending money to TAKE people's rights? |

| Senior Member | You know what's worse?? The fear campaign has apparently worked in Maine with 53 percent of the same-sex-marriage foes winning. People who had NO RIGHT TO MEDDLE IN MAINE AFFAIRS came in and successfully stripped people of their rights. What shocks me the most is that everyone I knew were going to vote No on 1. It's probably the wording of the proposition too with people thinking that voting YES would let same-sex marriage stay legal. Either way, it is very sad. |

This is the northeast, where people are supposed to understand this. I bet when it comes up in NJ we're gonna lose now. If it does come here I'm going to fight this HARD. I'm friends with a gay couple and to see them lose rights would anger me to no end. Though to be fair, I think in Maine took a step too far. I think the right thing for Maine now is to get civil unions first, then start thinking about marriage. Speaking of which, in Washington they just voted to EXPAND gay rights. The whole gay thing is a generational thing; in a generation or two we'll have gay marriage nationwide. I'll make another topic about the rest of these elections. And I'm sorry to all of the LGBTQAs in Maine. I pray that someday a majority will respect the rights of others to do as they please. -CSM |
