Any thoughts on this, abstinence, abstinence-only education, or contraception? Personally I think there's nothing wrong with abstaining from sex, and if that's your choice, good for you. But abstinence-only education, as it's been shown, does not work. Teaching teens to engage in safe sex is the best way to go as far as lowering pregnancy rates and STD transmission. If at all, abstinence should be taught along with contraception as a backup or alternative. | |

ANd even them the risk is about moderate that one damned cat gets in none the less |

Its parents telling a new generation of kids what to do. Two completely different mindsets with two completely different sets of morals and standards. Plus the younger generation tends to think of their parents as being old fashioned which is for the most part true. 2. Its sort of like a reverse psychology trick. Like telling someone not to push the big red button. It just makes them want to. Ridiculous opinion or somewhat in the ballpark, you decide cause I'm tired. I remember them having a sex ed program once in high school and the only thing they did was show us pictures of STDs and scare the **** out of a bunch of the high school girls. I don't agree with anyone under the age 18 having sex but thats just my personal standard. Otherwise if your going to have sex then go for it just remember that your responsible for results of your actions. |

I mean, if you can't have something, you as a human are paradoxically attracted to that thing. And if they don't know how to have safe sex, the chances of pregnancy goes through the roof when they do decide to break the scary tools. It's better to give hockey players safety gear than putting them on a no-injury policy. |

| Fairy-Slaying Maniac Join Date: Apr 2000 Location: 1592 Miles Away From Here Gender: Posts: 18,062 Thanks: 148 Thanked 683 Times in 482 Posts | Paradoxically, the people who support abstinence-only are unknowingly encouraging unsafe sex by teenagers whom have been told they can't have any sex ever before marriage and have decided to try it out anyway 'cuz they feel like it. The option which warns people of the downsides while not making a values judgment ensures these same people would decrease their chance of pregnancy, STDs and other nasty stuff, while also not causing reverse-psychology incidents in general. So my answer to abstinence-only people is simple: by all means, support and fund your idea. ...It's just going to do the opposite of what you expect. |

It's a blatant dodge. "Yes there is sex but IT WILL KILL YOU AND YOU'LL BE A SLUT, DON'T DO IT" sounds like bull to literally all but the most gullible teens, who are conditioned to believe anything they're told by a trusted source. |

My middle and high school did that. Then they made up statistics that said condoms had a 90% failure rate and the pill doesn't work. The only good that came out of the scare tactics was that I was able to tell a friend in college that he should probably get checked for HPV. Last edited by Lurch1982; 10-31-2009 at 02:03 PM. Makes me kinda glad I didn't pay much attention to what my teachers said in high school and just aced the test by pure memory. |
