There's always the "deterrence" issue raised with gun ownership. Simply owning an intimidating weapon is supposed to have a chilling effect on crime. But, yes, owning an fully-automatic rifle is sort of overkill. There's also the ability to raise your own militia. The idea is that if you let your guard down, the King of England is going to march in there with your pants down. Having a population, each with their own ICBM is going to prevent that. Sort of like how Switzerland has mandatory conscription, part of which requires you to keep a fully operational assault rifle all up in your crib (in addition to the Army Knife). |

As far as I know, one of the main reasons for the right to bear arms was to help overthrow an oppressive government. Whether it be a hostile takeover from another country, or some suit upstairs deciding to institute Most people are afraid of what might happen in these times, and want to be prepared. A gun helps you feel safe, and the more effective the gun the safer you feel. Not to mention how much more protected you would be. Either that, or they're a rich bastard and want a collection. :/ Last edited by Vgfian; 11-02-2009 at 07:03 AM. |

Ah, the overthrow-oppressive-government idea sort of makes sense. But I suspect that the leading reason is simply a machismo thing. |

They take it out on weekends and play with it in a responsible manner. And if it sounds like I'm making light of gun safety, I'm definitely not. I don't make light of car safety, either---hasn't stopped me from going out and spinning cookies in an empty parking lot, though. |

Nothing like pulling the trigger knowing your gonna hit something in front of you lol. And before anyone says anything I'm refering to target practice on cans in a safe place with no possibility of a bullet going astray. |

What would be wrong with someone say, having a weapon up on the wall that they don't use? It's just for display. And if you say anything about "what if it's loaded?", then they're a DUMB Collector, because you shouldn't LEAVE loaded weapons around where some idiot will get them! But some of the NRA-paranoid people are just maniacs. The **** they send me in the mail is hillarious. "THEY'RE TRYING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR GOD-GIVEN RIGHT TO HAVE A GUN!" Really? When in the bible does it say "Thou shalt own a gun" or "Every citizen must carry a gun"? I don't recall hearing that. Even the local priests and nuns don't recall that verse in the bible. Does it say in the Torah or Koran or any other religious book that thou shalt carry a gun at all times? "YOU NEED THIS TO DEFEND YOURSELF!" Excuse me? An AK-47? Yeah right...Maybe if I didn't care about anything else in the room. Grenades? Wait, you think I'll have the time if someone's breaking in my house to throw one of those? I'd rather just smack them across the head with a baseball bat, get them with pepper spray or a Kubaton, or shoot them in the legs with an easy-to-conceal weapon (like say...a pistol) "CONCEALED CARRY IS WHAT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE WHEN COLUMBINE IS REENACTED!" Maybe some, but not all the time. Besides, explain how you can conceal-carry Assault Weaponry? ![]() |

ASSAULT does not constitute defense. Therefore, an ASSAULT rifle does not DEFEND, it ATTACKS. Therefore, an ASSAULT rifle violates the spirit of the Second Amendment. -CSM |
