The RIAA is going ****ing nuts

Two giant industries, one insane solution: Require every goddamn communications device to contain a radio receiver.

Radio, RIAA: mandatory FM radio in cell phones is the future

Wat.

Penny Arcade gets credit for bringing the subject to light.

Yeah, I know FM Radio, that's the thing I use so I can have my iPod play off my car's speakers.

Actually, you'd be surprised how big FM radio audiences actually are. And they surprisingly encompass all age groups.

But unless you live in a college town, they only encompass a very narrow range of tastes.

The music industry is collapsing, and music as an artform will be better off once the industry is dead.

I still listen to FM radio. I don't want a phone with a radio in it, though. (Of course, I don't want a phone with anything but a phone in it, so "there's something wrong with" me.)

Fortunately, though, the RIAA is not a legislative entity, & indeed, due to their financial suffering, they're in no place to force electronics companies to do ANYTHING.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Well the RIAA being nuts is about par for the course.

As much as I'd like to debat Bomby's little line about the music industry doing nothing but damage to music as a form of artistic expression I know damn well that I'd get curbstomped with breackneck speed so I'll just have to settle with that seems like an over simplefacation to me.

I thought this would be something scary when I clicked on it (the RIAA has a history of scaring consumers and would-be artists), but it turns out it's just something that's crazy and frankly we hope isn't going to happen. As of right now I'm more concerned about them getting rid of net neutrality. Still, this does seem like something a group of bitter old men would support. -CSM

Ironically, 50 years ago, bitter old men fought against the development of FM radio.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Yeah, there is. You're awesome and reasonable about your gadget's uses. Consumerists don't get it, but we love you.

The only secondairy function that I'd like to see in a cell phone is a GPS as I have a horrible time navigating on my own.

90% of what I say is an exaggeration. Including this.

Yes. Because having tyrannical investors owning rights to everything you do forever could actually be a really good thing.

Personally, I think FM radio should be declared a torture device.
