The rally itself mostly contained musical performances and comedic moments, but Jon Stewart's speech at the end was very meaningful, essentially saying that the press tends to blow most things out of proportion and be overly political. I couldn't agree more--I've quit watching cable news altogether, because I mainly grew tired of the whole "OMG THE TEA PARTIERS ARE ANGRY!!!1111" "SHIRLEY SHERROD OMG!!11" "THERE'S A BOY TRAPPED IN A BALLOON OH WAIT NO THERE ISNT!!11" types of stories. It just seems to me that the press can't represent America, because it's gotten so interested in serving their own needs (for ratings, profit or otherwise). That and all of the hatred in shows that are both news and commentary...why do we feel the need to make everything political? What happened to the idea of agreeing to disagree? I think it speaks to the maturity (mainly the lack thereof) of the citizens of our country when we have adults at rallies who demonize people like Obama or Harry Reid just because they disagree with them. I'm sure it's always been this way, but I'm probably noticing it more now that I'm more politically aware. Sometimes I feel ashamed to live among people who act so childish...maybe I'll just move to Canada... But seriously...what do you think? | ||

The media on both sides discovered that playing the blame game and exaggerating everything got better ratings that just reporting what happened, and we're paying for that with a legions of people that think everything and everyone that doesn't agree with them is out to socialize the nation or give guns to babies. I also thought it was a little ironic that the best speech on unity I've heard in the last two years came from a comedian. >_> |
