Thumbs down House of Reps removing funding from Planned Parenthood?

I'm having trouble finding links to news stories about this. So instead, here's a link to the Planned Parenthood letter to Congress that you can all totally use.

Planned Parenthood: House bars Planned Parenthood from federal funding

Because this is a terrible, terrible thing.

And then they wonder why people go to abortion.

Here's a link to an actual story covering the vote:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/18/us...arenthood.html

PROTIP: if you want to prevent abortions, you need to fund organizations that provide birth control to populations who have the highest number of abortions.

And more importantly, here is a Democratic Congresswoman's response. After her colleague went on a rant about a specific "abortion" procedure, she took the floor to announce she had in the past undergone that very procedure - with a child she wanted, but had become nearly unviable and was threatening to her health. Hopefully, it offers some perspective.

Thanks, ZG.

The one thing that EVERY person who discusses this needs to know is: Congress has long barred the use of federal money for abortion.

The money PP is getting NEVER WENT TOWARDS ABORTIONS. THAT IS ALREADY ILLEGAL. The federal funding goes towards things like cervical cancer screening and sexually transmitted disease treatment and counselling (including HIV). That money never paid for an abortion.

It should also be noted that over 90% of services provided by Planned Parenthood to millions of women every year are preventative, treatments, counselling, and others. That leaves less than a 10% average of their services actually being abortions nationwide (ALL of which are privately funded).

Of course, the fact that they do abortion services is what's going to be on everyone's mind.

Also, the people that want to refuse funding want people to die from cancer and STDs.

That's basically what you're saying. Don't deny it.

STD Lovers.

Also, ZG that article says she's a Republican.

No it doesn't. Rep. stands for representative. They use only R or D for party.

I care. I've been involved with an argument on Facebook with an anti-abortion friend of mine. And I've been more worried about what's going on at the state level in Wisconsin (with Scott Walker essentially trying to centralize power in the state and use the National Guard for his personal Gestapo), Missouri (they're trying to repeal child labor laws), and Arizona (where the governor is STILL trying as hard as she can to keep her death panel going). I'd like to resolve these problems before starting an abortion brawl. -CSM

Um, wat.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Granted, I don't like Brewer but...what?

It's totally not an abortion thing at all, though. It's about taking away funding for a group which provides medical services for many, largely including disadvantaged women. The abortions are a non-issue: they are funded privately, that has nothing to do with the money they are receiving from the federal government to provide care for sexual and reproductive health.

That said, why is the US politically imploding? >:[

^Unfortunately, many conservative senators only recognize the connection between Planned Parenthood and abortions. It doesn't matter what else PP does, they will vote against it because they are inherently evil for performing abortions on the premises.

Quickly, cut all funding to hospitals, then.

Because apparently, common sense has disappeared from all political proceedings so that we can all can get utterly f**ked for the next few years or so.

Or however long it takes to show that this line of thinking is harming way more people than it helps. If it even effects those that are against it.

I can't say I'm pleased with the way this is all going. Obviously, there are problems in the US that need to be worked out, but it seems like the key blocks in society are falling down over there.

I care. I just didn't get here until now. It's been a loooong day. So long, in fact, that my vision is blurring as I type these words, & I'd rather give a good response later than a s;oppe m3sss rite naw.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I hate my country. :{/

Like, America would be awesome if it wasn't so full of hate-mongering and closed-mindedness. Now, those kinds of people who monger the hate and close the minds are the ones with huge voices and way too much power. It's freaky.

Here's the latest. Lots of biased and unbiased links in here so you can track what's going on. If it weren't for Rep. Giffords' tragedy (and a very big one indeed; I have deep reverence for any member of the Congressional Bike Caucus) I'd be talking more about this. -CSM
