Osama bin Laden is dead

CNN.com - Breaking News, U.S., World, Weather, Entertainment & Video News

It's about time.

I hate to say it though, I don't think this will have much of an effect on terrorism.

^No, but it will do wonders for Obama in terms of being re-elected.

ANd here I was thinking he'd been dead in a cave for 7 years.

Well, I guess that's kind of unimportant, what with killing him in an airstrike and all. :\

^Excellent.

One of my favorite tweets has been: President Obama's television address will interrupt Celebrity Apprentice on the East Coast, no joke.

But, seriously, this is so surreal.

^You stole my line.

Nevertheless, this does preclude Osama being brought to justice, which I think would do far more damage to the terrorists than killing him outright. I was hoping he would stand trial in every country where a citizen was killed as a result of an attack by him or one of his associates. And there are a lot of countries on that list. Then I hoped he would be put in Singapore's jails, which have the reputation of being some of the toughest to handle.

I hope this will at least bring solace to the 9/11 victims' families and friends; a friend of mine was killed in the attacks and I remember being the only student in my high school who was seriously upset and depressed that day (everyone else didn't care or salivated at the opportunity to go to war).

But I'm also wondering how a lot of the victims of his attacks WITHIN the Middle East are taking this; terrorists kill thousands in low profile attacks within their own countries. -CSM

That thought crossed my mind. However, the troops had orders to try to retrieve and/or kill. Given what I'm hearing about the delicate nature of the operation, I'm inclined to believe what happened was a necessity.

^He probably was killed by an explosion that was directed at something else. I'm just saying I want to make an example of Osama, bring him to justice, and put him in prison for the rest of his life because, in his mind, being executed would make him a martyr. I want to make him feel that he did a lot of terrible things. -CSM

After 10 years, the oath is redeemed. His head will be sent to Washington D.C. and his followers will follow behind the chariot in chains.

Not an airstrike. Covert ops. CIA stuff. Very surreal.

I have to say... I'm actually surprised at myself for having very mixed reactions to this.

Is it good that someone who preached hatred and espoused murder can no longer do so? Absolutely yes. Is it good to go and celebrate his death with cheering and rampant patriotism? I honestly can't comfortably say yes to that.

Like TML said, not airstrike. Special operation, he was reportedly killed by gunfire.

I agree with you, TML. I'm uncomfortable with the 'celebrations'. It's one thing to feel relieved or that justice has been served (if you feel that way). But the cheering does give me a weird feeling.

Also, during the course of reading this article, I somehow got 'Osama' and 'Obama' backwards in my mind and was really freaked out for a few seconds.

I won't lie, people cheering and celebrating bring to mind all the hatred expressed by many US citizens when some folks in the Middle East were filmed doing the same thing. People can quibble over the reason, like that changes things (civilians versus a genocidal dictator), but at the heart of it, the reason is the same: an ideal that you believe in has been fulfilled. *shrug*

The exact words I heard in the news reports were "fire fight". He got shot.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Exactly. The waving of flags and cheering is just a little too similar...Which is ironic coming from a predominately Christian nation:

Actually, all that celebrating in the streets filmed in middle eastern countries that aired after 911 was completely unrelated. Most of it was filmed durring a holiday.
It was propaganda designed to piss people off and support the pro-war sentiments at the time. It was revealed as such sortly there after, but for some reason most of the news channels didn't report on it and the whole thing just sorta vanished in the following weeks.

I suppose the world is a better place without Osama.
Somehow it doesn't feel right to celebrate somebody's death though...
