That's very poorly worded, if it's intended to ban civil unions.

"no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized"

Legally speaking, a civil union is not an equivalent of marriage. I don't believe the law even recognizes terms like "like substantial equivalent" and that aside, a lawyer or judge could easily make argument that all marriages or unions are ideas and therefore insubstantial.

^Most states DO ban civil unions. While I can understand that in, say, Utah or Alabama, that BS has no place in a Northeastern state. -CSM
