Free-market capitalism is far more likely to enslave you than any of the things in that article.

^Yeah, I heard about that. He still needs to apologize for NDAA & vote against the next Patriot Act extension before he comes off the list, though; fortunately he has 4 years left on his term to do it.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Truth be told, between capitalism and socialism, it's picking a lesser evil. No system's perfect.

Liberals don't have anything against free market capitalism. Conservatives (or more accurately, Reactionaries) have managed to change the definitions of both capitalism and socialism to mean something that they did not used to mean. Liberals believe that capitalism cannot survive without a strong middle class and small businesses, and they wish to focus on protecting them from abuses by major corporations. Conservatives have changed the meaning of capitalism to what really is a form of cartelism in rewarding those who seek to destroy successful businesses for a profit and who destroy American jobs for a profit.

And here's a great article on how Republicans have changed the definition of "socialism." Political Animal - ‘Socialist’ used to mean something -CSM

I asked both sides because I thought it would be good to get answers from both. I find the freedom part irrelevant for the most part, because in either ideology, someone controls you. Capitalism can be just as oppressive, with land lords, company owners, and banks owning everything you use and being able to disposess you at will. Capitalism in its purity has nothing to do with free markets, because no company really wants one of those. They want a market with just them, not competition. In socialism, whatever the society/state sets up may do the same, and if it is a social democracy the people with minority opinions will be oppressed by the majority. All business has to be done under a bureacratic web of government, and everything must be approved by this form and that form, though that is really no different from the US right now. You certainly cannot just decide to start any business.

My basic point is either way, there is really no room for freedom. Someone always comes along to mess that up, because humans just cannot leave other humans be in their lives. Have to control everything.
