SOPA might not be dead; internet giants to black out on Jan. 18th in protest

SOPA Isn’t Dead; It’s Just Sleeping, Will Wake Up in February | GameFront

Quote:
We had heard that SOPA might be dead, but it turns out it isn’t. The House Judiciary Committee issued a press release today stating plans to continue the markup on the controversial bill in February.

What this means is that Lamar Smith hopes that all the furor will die down in the meantime and allow them to move forward with the bill without all the protests and stuff. Your job, now, is to keep bitching about it. Don’t let the terrorists win. All the blackouts that will be taking place tomorrow are a good start, but we have to keep it up until this bill goes away forever or miraculously morphs into something that isn’t f–king horrible. Good luck.
Among the sites either considering or committed to the blackout:

Amazon
AOL
Destructoid
eBay
Facebook
Google
IAC
LinkedIn
Mozilla
PayPal
Reddit
Twitter
Wikimedia
Wordpress
Yahoo

If not being able to visit Facebook or use Google won't get people interested in what's happening, nothing will.

I think people get the message. Also there was a great piece in the Huffington Post that could describe how the Kochs could muzzle any scientist supporting global warming if SOPA was passed. -CSM

I'm not sure if I'm ready to go a day without Twitter yet... I just started it on Saturday and I already have a serious addiction.

Spoiler Below
@DPeezyMadCity if you hate yourself enough to follow me.

But I very much support the blackouts regardless.

I'm in the middle of telling those people representing this dump of a state to not let it go. I feel important!

The only website I use that's blacked out so far is Wikipedia. I think what Google did was smart, I mean, how are we supposed to spread awareness if people can't look up what SOPA is? Googling it would be the easiest way.

why yes my parents are proud

I think making sites unavailable for use is the best way to get the point across.

I find it odd that I don't hear many prominent conservative types yelling that this is socialism, government control creeping in, etc etc. Honestly, censor the whole damn Internet with our own great firewall so the RIAA and MPAA can feel a little better, and to prevent people from getting prescriptions online from Canadian pharmacies. And they won't pay a dime for it, the consumers will. But food stamps? Now that's something to complain about.

I'm wondering what the heck I was thinking when I posted that a half hour ago. Like, "LET'S PROTEST WITHOUT PROTESTING". >_>

Yeah, completely blacking sites out is a stronger way of protesting. Most sites give an explanation of what SOPA is and why they're against it anyway.

imgur is also protesting, which is a rather bold move for a image hoster, but then again most of imgur is fairly liberal.

And so today is the first day anyone at school was talking about SOPA. I think spreading the message worked.
