You could understand why I am baffled by the people here that buy them, only to watch their traditional DVDs in stretched-mode, then.

At least region coding is illegal here.

^Maybe so, but you're in Region 4 anyway.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

If that were true, I wouldn't have had to get a modchip in my wii.

^I meant for DVDs.
ACCC would need to look at gaming consoles and rule on those too.

We still get region-encoded DVD's. I had to get/crack some software just to circumvent that. >_<

The way the ACCC is supposed to have arranged things is that it is considered anti-competitive behaviour to sell region-locked DVD players. Computer drives somehow escaped the ruling, however. In addition to that, Oz copyright law specifically allows for cracking software/hardware to circumvent region coding.

Ah. I think I heard something about a court ruling having to do with system modding. Was that the same case, then?

I don't see the difference, really. I'm not picky.

The biggest differences? Blu-ray did not innately support dvd. They're actually capable of different functions. Blu-ray discs likely contribute to deforestation, because as far as I recall they are using a super-compressed paper processing technique to create the discs.

Other than that, the only difference is in compression. HD-DVD is further compressed, but human perceptions aren't sharp enough to pick up the differences.

As far as I know, they both have major DRM issues.

honestly, I've seen both in comparison to each other and standard def, I really don't see a difference in any format. so standard def is fine with me, I'll just keep getting normal DVDs thank you.

also, I don't see a point in having to upgrade to hi-def and shelling out around several thousand dollars on the player, the tv and replacing my dvd library with HD DVDs or blue rays if I can't tell the difference between standard def and hi-def. it's not that big of a difference! it's not like "ZOMG! MY EYES R TEH BL33DING FROM HOW GR8 BLU RAYS IZ!" because over all, hi-def is over hyped and over rated for just a slightly better quality.
