Tiers are based off of winners of tournaments. Fox is the top of the tier for a good reason--he matches up with so many people and can easily rape on any stage. Fox is the reason many of the Melee stages aren't used in tournaments--he would win every time on a place like Onett or Yoshi's Island. So yeah, tiers exist. The best Fox player ever could easily beat the best Bowser player ever.

Capt, Tiers weren't created by Fox players. I play as Doctor Mario and I still think tiers exist. People play who they enjoy playing as--if that's Fox, more power to them. There are some well-known tourney players who play as mid-to-low tiers: Gimpyfish plays Bowser, King plays Jigglypuff, the list goes on.
You have said nothing to convince me that the tier structure was coded into the game. It's still something imposed onto the game by players.
You've also said nothing to explain tiers to those of us who don't follow "official" tournaments at all.
Playing Bowser is largely about anticipation and exploitation; once Mr. Best-Fox-Player and Mr. Best-Bowser-Player had fought a few times, I guarantee Mr. Best-Bowser-Player would have picked up on Mr. Best-Fox-Player's habits and patterns and started to use them against him.

This is how I read that: "I fought my friend's Marth one time and I won, so tiers don't exist."

Wow, presumptuous & arrogant much? Seriously, that was the first place you went when you read what I posted? Dang.
No, I actually meant in some campus tourneys, fighting some guys who are absolute monsters with Marth, Fox, Doc, etc. I'm talking about matches that I lost, though I certainly put up a good front. Heck, I'm even talking about matches where I got completely dismantled for the first 2 lives, but started turning it around afterwards.

People whining about tiers (whether they won or lost, whether they use an upper-tier character or lower) when I'm just trying to play disrupt my enjoyment of the game. It's them that I'm insulting.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Tier list - SmashWiki

But yeah, the best Bowser player could give the best Fox player a challenge, or :O, he might win! The best Fox player may be the best Fox player, but the best Bowser player may be a better player overall.

Sword guys who cheat? What does that even mean?

You don't have to know about "sneaky game holes." If you know tournament players, play some time matches on stages like Big Blue, with items on. If they don't want to because it's not fun, that's their fault and they're dumb.

If you meant something else, let me know.

Now I want you guys to pay close attention to this:

If you do advanced techniques, you're not necessarily a good player.
If you're a good player, the advanced techniques are extremely useful.

See what I'm saying? I can L-cancel, wavedash, Shuffle, but there are people out there that are way better than I am. Don't piss all over the idea of tournament players just because they play the game differently.

Enjoy the game. Don't talk **** about other people who enjoy it in their way.

Also, I have nothing against any of you guys, but every time someone makes an unfair generalization, especially when they're saying something stupid about something I enjoy, I get a little bothered.

Also, Brawl is my favorite.
You are now my least favorite person.

I never said anything about tiers being coded in...because they're not. Tiers are just statistic things that tourney players have come up with based on winners and losers across the board, especially in 'professional' tournaments. I understand that Bowser can be a force to be reckoned with when you play right, but Fox's matchup against Bowser is really, really good. The Bowser player could put up a fight--he might even win a round--but in a best-of-3 series, the odds are that the Fox player will win. At least in a good tourney.

Keep in mind, tiers are useless if the person playing with fox or Falco or whoever is absolutely terrible.

Yeah, sorry, that was kinda harsh. Forgive me, though. I've heard that argument a lot.

And yeah, I get what you're saying. Like I said earlier, regardless of tiers, a player's skill comes into play--A great Luigi could do some damage against a good Marth, especially after learning habits of the player.

Well, yeah, because they're idiots. I say a third time: regardless of tiers, you have to be good with someone for them to be a good character.

I'm sorry if I came off as brash, Capt, and I have nothing against you. But really, after reading so much "glitch-exploiting" and "tiers don't exist" stuff, it starts to wear on you.

All right, here.

Player A is Fox, Player B is Bowser.

Player A and Player B are equally good, and have won tournaments. Lots of them.

It is highly likely that player A will beat Player B in a Best of 3 series.

Get me?

This is kind of why I avoid this tournament crap. Too many people get overly defensive about everything and it's just not fun to play anymore. Generally I fair pretty well in tournaments, but far too m any people take them too seriously.

That being said, I haven't spent enough time with Brawl yet to determine whether I prefer it over Melee yet, but I am leaning towards Brawl.

I kinda see your point. I still think it's still kinda ridiculous, but that's my opinion. And like Auron (that's Auron, right?) I don't really have interest in Smash tournaments because of stuff like that, and all the rules. I just play for fun.

Lightbulb Melee

Melee was the best fighting game ever. I was a master at the game. I had it down to a math, really... This "Brawl" is awesome but for each pro, I find 2 cons. It feels much less hardcore, though still a near perfect game.
