Where does your support lie?

I'm not picky, until years later I find an old film that looks so obsolete compared to modern day movies.

I do have specific preferences about how movies go about special effects and all that jazz. If it was executed well and not crude during its time, then I generally respect the film.

But overall, nah I'm not a biggie on that kind of stuff.

My support lies with whichever format doesn't end up making me waste a few hundred dollars on a player that only matters for a couple years.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I have neither; I probably won't end up buying either, if Digital Delivery does what I expect it to.

If I had to pick? Whichever one has Cowboy Bebop first.

I'm not up to speed with the technical details of either format, but I appreciate HDDVD being region-free.

I have a PS3, but I haven't bought any Blu-ray movies yet. No HDTV--plus, I like to take movies up to camp with me, and I can't take a movie if it's tied to a format that, quite frankly, only a fool would drag up to a mouse-infested shack in the woods.

Believe me, it won't last long. The HD DVD's I've seen at work actually already have the region logos on them, but I'm not sure if they've actually put the region coding on.

I support Blu-Ray. The technology is more advanced and the picture is noticeably better (especially the depth and color).

The hell're you talking about? We've yet to have a video transfer where there was any noticeable difference in contrast between the two versions (I have no idea what you mean by "depth") and the resolution in both images is exactly the same. The only tangible advantage Blu-Ray has is completely lossless audio, and exactly nobody has the kind of sound system it would take to appreciate that.

If you see a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD that looks superior to its counterpart, that's because of laziness on the part of the studio, though there are few enough movies on both formats anyway.

The resolution is the same, but the field rate affects the quality of the picture. Both run at a frame rate of 24 fps, but HD DVD uses 60i timing rather than native timing, which Blu-Ray uses. Of course, you can always buy a chip to decode the repeat field flags caused by the 60i timing.

Reel it back there, buddy. I've never heard of timing being referred to as "60i". Do you mean to say it runs in 1080i, which is to say that it gives out thirty frames per second rather than 60 at 1080p?

High Definition: NOW, YOU CAN REALLY SEE THE COMPRESSION ARTIFACTS!

...And what the hell is up with the widescreen craze? So far, all it's good for is making everyone on traditional media have incredibly fat heads.

That's silly. The whole point of HD discs is that compression isn't as important or as necessary. If you watch anything running from an HD source, you would be hard-pressed to see compression artifacts as noticeable as in a DVD.

What you're experiencing is taking 4:3 signals an stretching them to fit a 16:9 display. Most widescreen TVs have an option to display 4:3 in 4:3, so that's sort of a moot point.

Try digital television. Or compressed videogame textures. It's entirely possible that I'm mistaken, though, and it's all hideous without any artifacting. It doesn't help that everyone seems to think 900% sharpness is a good idea.

Perhaps they do, but no one here runs them that way. They just watch their programming with ugly squashed heads.

Digital television's artifacting is partially a result of having a crappy bandwidth to work with for the volume of data being transferred. I mean, I could be totally off-base there, but that's my understanding.

Pretty much. And everything is expected to go to digital, now. Yaaaayyyy.

I suppose you can't blame that on having TEH HI REZ, but it seems like the HUMONGOUS new screens aren't exactly high enough definition for their size, so they just blow it up for all to see.

That's not a problem with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray though.

And I can't help it if HD-watchers in Australia are dumb, man. That is not my area.
