It is a glass. Any fluids it appears to contain are merely occupying adjacent space. Additionally, were it not a perceptual matter, I could easily observe that half of the glass is full while half of the glass is empty. Most importantly, the "upper" portion of the glass is most often the empty portion of the glass. Some portions of the glass will spend much more time being full than other portions of the glass. Are these portions interchangeable? No, the top portion is unfillable while the lower portion is unfilled. Any fullness it might experience whilst the lower portion is unfull while likely only be temporary. In addition to even that observation, the glass will always be "filled" with some gaseous substance as long as it is not subject to a vacuum. Any liquids it might contain will likely be a transient state. Most glasses, we can presume, will spend most time "empty" of liquids, although many will contain a residue. So we see that whether or not a glass might contain something can be a complex matter of assumption. Even more ironically, it will only be considered a glass for as long as you perceive it to be a glass, because the ability of the glass to be seen as a glass can only be inherited from your perception of it as a glass. |
