INFLUENCES

What are the people, things, culture, events that have influenced your life? Like, your interexts, activities, bahavior, mode of thinking, beliefs?

I'd say:
  • Calvin and Hobbes
  • Ray Bradbury
  • Walt Kelly (Pogo)
  • Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics)
  • Jethro Tull
  • The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test
  • Scott McCloud
  • M83
  • Daft Punk
  • Alan Moore

    And to a lesser extent,
  • Encyclopedia Dramatica
  • Magic: The Gathering
  • Joey Comeau (A Softer World)
  • VGF <3 luv u

These things have all influenced my beliefs on art, society, and humanity. Also how I behave and talk, and what I know about the world and humanity.
and you?

Represent, man. Murakami's the best. I'm in the process of getting everything else he's written, and am reading Dance Dance Dance and Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman rite nao. I love how unclear he makes the line between reality and dream in all of his stuff. And the philosophical and musical references.

@ Galefore:

If you haven't, definitely check out Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. I've been meaning to read Dance, Dance, Dance for a while, though I actually just started After Dark while I was in the hospital.

Also, Norwegian Wood (which was the first book of his I ever read) is actually getting adapted into a film by a great Vietnamese director named Tran Anh Hung, due later out this year in Japan which means bootleg DVD's of it should hit America eventually. A decent film was already made out of Tony Takitani, which is in Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman if you haven't read it already.

Arrow BTW: I am also a witch.

  • Mitch Hedburg: My friends can tell when I've lapsed into Mitch Hedberg mode, then promptly stop listening to me.
  • Azumanga Daioh: When I started drawing, this was a major influence on how to draw human figures. I still have the studio's character reference sheets in my reference folder.
  • Touhou Project: It's in the games I play, the music I listen to, the videos I watch, the manga I read. It's got to be doing something. It also opened up the world of curtain-fire sh'mups, which actually rewire your brain in strange ways.
  • Kongregate.com: **** you Kongregate, I want those hundreds of hours of my life back, playing your addicting and ultimately unfulfilling games.
  • Penny Arcade: It's the only reason I left Canada, because there is no PAXNorth. (Yet.) Sitting next to Robert Khoo almost made me crap my pants (figuratively).
  • Tim Rogers: Enjoyable to read, even if he is a misanthropic rambling *******. actionbutton.net's manifesto on video games lent a new modernist perspective on interactive media, and his extremely long post about Earthbound made me think about what sort of role video games and video game designers have in society (and want to play Earthbound again).
  • ... and some friends and family you have not heard of.
