There are if they're made that way. I've had many socks that have embellishments on the intended-outside of your ankle, so you have to wear them on the correct foot for that whole idea to work.

This. I had to do this when I was in high school. We had tiny teddy bears or the school logo on our socks.

But for other socks, no.

I don't even believe socks naturally form pairs. All you have to do is choose two, and you're ready to go.

Of course, I have 10 black socks and 8 white socks in my drawer, four pairs of gloves, and three pairs of shoes. When I choose my socks, I don't care which is on which foot - only what colors I have on. With my gloves, however, the hand that they are on matters. How many shoes must I choose to always have at least one matching pair? If I take two socks, how many combinations are there and what are the chances of picking each? If I take two gloves, how many combinations are there and what are the chances of pulling out a pair?

^Because you buy bulk packs, so all the same-colored ones actually are identical. That doesn't mean left-right socks don't exist just because you personally don't buy them.

This makes me think, if regular, everyday, run-of-the-mill socks were in pairs with a left and a right, more people buy $600 designer socks like they do shoes and other items? and what if shoes were not set as left and right? Less buyers of designer shoes?..
