I want an avatar when and how do I get one?

By submitting your will (and money) to Shane.

Supposedly there was some option to buy default ones with VbPoints, but it broke somehow.

It's actually in the control panel, if you've posted enough. But only small default ones.

If you get 10,000 posts... you can make your own avatar.

But really, making a donation is much quicker. And you get a larger avatar size.

Yeah I don't think I can post that much even if I tried to.

So if I do donate does it have to be a cetain amount to be able to get an avatar?

I'm not sure.

I think it's now impossible to get an avatar without donating or mod privileges.

I'm pretty sure that you have to be awesome enough to be a mod, give Shane money, or post ten thousand posts.

If you can't define yourself by your eloquent posts, a 50x50 px piece of real estate won't save you.
