Thumbs down Parents who teach their kids to console themselves with food when they feel bad.

I blame them more than anyone for the childhood obesity epidemic.

They probably didn't mean to do it on purpose.

But if they did, they're real world-class isomorons.

That's only a mild proponent, though. What's a bigger issue is the obsession with finishing the serving you've taken or been given, and not delivering a wider variety in diet.

Yeah, the big thing on finishing portions, no matter what it is or whether it's the right one, is really something behind obesity.

I was hit with it a lot, but by ignoring all of it and eating what I felt like, I managed to remain thin and healthy. ...I wish I could gain a little more weight though, as I'm Michael Jackson's height and only 10 lbs more than he was when he died. (I have been this way for many years without any health issues, though, so don't worry. It'd just be better if I weighed a bit more...)

I'm pretty sure the original intent behind the clear-your-plate mentality was to prevent kids from taking too much in the first place.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Also, 'cause they put things like broccoli, spinach, and Brussels sprouts on their plate too, in a vain attempt to get vitamins into their amorphous, corn-syrup-filled children.

Oddly I've never actually met any parents who gave kids anymore than something like a glass of milk when they felt bad in real life. Most parents I knew would often listen or talk with them and if they said "Leave me alone", they'd either

a) hear "I wanna talk" and bother them.
b) Hear "LEave me alone" and wait for them to talk later.

Guess which ones my parents were? You have a 50/50 chance.

Regarding the diet....I think those kids who'll eat anything without complaining or just eat their stuff are rare. A lot of kids I know wouldn't like broccoli or something that smells like something they know they didn't like (Because taste happens to be mostly smell). That's why my sister and three of my cousins were such picky eaters and wouldn't wanna taste a whole lotta stuff, meanwhile I was asking mom to make Lima beans cause I wanted to try them.

What? No!
I saw a show where this girl broke up with someone and her mom told her to go eat ice cream.

You're a bit wrong, Bomby. Yes, parents teaching their children to comfort their children with food is a cause of obesity, but you're forgetting other things:

Culture of Convenience: Convenient foods are often unhealthy.
Prevalence of unhealthy foods: Too much sugar, fats, etc. in foods
It's not even real sugar: Sugar alternatives are often less expensive than the real deal. Also, more unhealthy. Avoid artificial sweeteners like death, especially agave nectar.
Western medicine: Everything should be cured with a pill! Why should people have to work at being healthy?

I'm somewhat convinced that there's some sort of conspiracy between health insurance companies and the food industry. Fill the people with unhealthy foods and then don't heal them entirely. Squeeze as much money as you can from them! Exploit! Exploit! Exploit! Keep them dumb! Introduce a new fad diet every year! The higher we can raise insurance costs on the obese, the higher we can raise them on everybody else! That's America! Isn't it beautiful?

-------

Now Bomby, let's not get carried away here. Can you really blame everything on capitalism?

-------

Can and will, Bomby.

-------

Okay then, Bomby. But you do realize everyone on VGF thinks you're some schizoid-commie-freak, right?

-------

I've never really given much of a damn, Bomby.

Kids are picky eaters because parents don't introduce different foods early enough.

The "clear you plate" thing comes from the depression-era parents, where you damn well had to eat whatever you were given, and wasting food was the absolute pinnacle of wrongness. Then you couple that with the American food industry's "LET'S GIVE PEOPLE MORE SO THEY THINK THEY'RE GETTING A REALLY GOOD DEAL!", so when you order a meal, you're getting enough food for up to three normal people, then still expect children to finish their dinner completely! It's absolutely disgusting.

Artificial sweeteners are toxic. I can't believe anyone would willingly consume them.

While I disagree fake sugars are toxic, I do agree they're a bad idea:

There's a ridiculous amount of study showing horrible side effects of artificial sweeteners. Reducing the body's ability to know when it's full after eating is only one of many things that should make you avoid them.

Yeah... but it's not toxic =/

Irregardless, not a good idea to ingest on a regular basis.

I beg to differ. It's as akin to a poison as you can get without being outright deadly.
