Tool-Assisted Speedrunning

http://tasvideos.org

Tool-assisted speedruns are basically a record of keypresses applied to a game to get the best results possible. For example: that SMB3 video made a while back that beat the game in 11 minutes was a TAS. A human didn't play that game, at least not in the strictest sense, but many techniques using an emulator were applied (such as slow-motion and savestates) to get at least what looks like a perfect playthrough. You can learn more and see tons of TASes at the URL above. They're really fun to watch.

note: I'm not sure if this was the right forum to post this in, but the majority of the TASes on that site are performed on classic Nintendo systems.

I remember looking these up a while ago. I posted something about the X and X2 simultaneous TAS ( http://tasvideos.org/750S.html ) earlier; wacky stuff.

[edit: I found my old thread here. Also has that wacky Averaging Gradius thing. ]

I've seen a particularily amazing playthrough of Mega Man 2, created this way - along with the infamous Mario 3 video. Everyone seemed to think they were totally legit, when they first came into being. I wasn't too surprised when word finally spread that they were "tool-assisted" runs.

the Mega Man one is absolutely insane. He's just zipping through walls the whole time.
