It would be hard to go anywhere remotely related to retro gaming and not hear about River City Ransom. I've never played the game myself, although I've got the ROM somewhere. If I ever saw the cartridge, I would jump at the chance to buy it, though.

Is that the famous one where you walk down the street beating people up? Or is that called, Streets of Fury, or something? I can't remember.

Yeah, River City Ransom is one of the few actually well-known beatemups. It used to be an entire genre, so that's kind of a funny thing to ask. I'd say Double Dragon deserves more acclaim, but everyone seems to be in denial that the whole genre ever happened. Either way, the genre gave birth to Street Fighter and all of the clones that have since followed (Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Samurai Showdown, Rise of the Robots, King of Fighters, Tekken, Bloody Roar, Soul Caliber/Soul Blade, DOA, etc..)

And the one you're thinking of is called Streets of Rage, I think.

Aside from all of that - Mega Man 2 is a good pick for the next gotm. It's the quintessential Mega Man game, the game that really kicked it all off. Games like Mega Man Battle Networks are a poor excuse for an installment in what began as an exciting franchise.

Well, it depends where you fall on the old-school vs. difficulty graph. As the series progressed, it got both easier and full of more and more 'features'.

It's obvious, just comparing for instance between Mega Man 2 and 3, that they went and used all of the better ideas for bosses and powers very early on. Since you can't just do the same thing twice, it just became harder and harder to maintain the fresh feeling the series still had at number 2. I'm very fond of both 3 and 4, and hold them in nearly as high regard as 2, but it was monetarily speaking the peak of the series - and for good reason. From the perspective of someone who saw the release of every single Mega Man game - 2 was the climax of the original series, and aside from a revitalization with the release of Mega Man X - nothing's ever met the same mark in the eyes of the industry. Since they began to expand the franchise beyond the original series, Capcom has been as bad as Nintendo itself in the way of continuity.

I never was greatly fond of Mega Man classic. Heck, I actually think 6 is my favorite in the Classic (My opinion is messed up, I know). I actually perfer Battle Network, though, due to combining elements of RPG with action, like the Tales of series (Although Tales of Destiny 1 = Lame).

Battle Network.. I cannot abide. They gave him a mullet in it. Why? Who was in charge of that? They need to be locked up somewhere far, far away from every other cool videogame mascot. Forever.

Angry

No, Metal Gear took too long to make Snake cool. Besides, he never had a mullet until the Solid series. This is the retro forum, you fool!
