Hook is named after the villain, so is Mars Attack!, and Batman 89 should have been called Joker. Donkey Kong is the main attraction in the game, so it was named after him.

Dunno if it's just a legend or not, but I heard somewhere that Shigeru Miyamoto thought it meant "stubborn monkey."

They gave him the name Donkey to signal he was stupid, and the word kong since he was a monkey stealing girlfriends.

Apparently it was supposed to be called "Monkey Kong" but the guy who made it screwed up and called it "Donkey Kong" instead.

Good thing, Monkey Kong sounds retarded. I doubt that's it though.

A donkey = A stubborn animal.

A kong = Taken from King Kong, a giant, girl stealing ape.

Donkey Kong = A stubborn ape who refuses to give up his kidnapped girl.

NintendoLand has the full story.

Donkey is japanese that translates roughly into "stupid" or "crazy". Kong translates into monkey.
