Question 2D or 3D

Simple fact: oldschool is better. 2D or 3D, the concepts and gameplay were new that first time you fired up your first cartridge. This is why the Wii has been such a huge success - simplicity with a fresh feeling.

Discuss.

Depends on how the game is designed. The Mario games I'll be more for 2D action while games like Metal Gear Solid just work better in 3D. Sure, when I first played Super Mario 64, it actually came pretty natural, but Metal Gear just cannot compare to Metal Gear Solid.

Unfortunately, the rule is broken if the first game in the series is just poorly made, as is the case with the Metal Gear series. That first game is a trial of frustration more than a game to be played.

What about new Castlevania games?

That just leaves a crack in your theory.

But the newest Castlevanias are mostly just repeating the same principles that were first experienced in Super Metroid, which arguably did exploration and continuous environments more eloquently and seamlessly - and memorably. I do agree that the newer Castlevanias are funner to play, in my experience, but that is in part because I never liked the older Castlevanias.

Define 'old-school', and I'll weigh in.

^ Well in my opinion, 'old-school' refers to classic games from the 80s. Such as space invaders, Bubble Bobble, Tetris etc!!! But I could be wrong?

Anyways, what about the Ninja Gaiden series? I found these to be a ****ing pain in the ass to master. ****ing hard'n cruel they was...

Fighting games are easier to look at objectively, because they literally are the same formula used in repetition. There is no exploration involved, there are rarely new concepts introduced. They're a branch off of the beat-em-up genres where Double Dragon and Final Fight flourished. While Soul Blade is a good game, its sequels have been less prestigious or interesting. To keep the formula fresh, they are forced to bring in out-series crossovers and new plots. Of course, these all branch directly out of two fighting games: Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. It should be generally understood that while you personally might like a newer game more, that is dependent entirely upon your own experience. If you played Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat back when this was a new concept, and liked them, you would remember the experience and take it to heart. The newer games are just games, not a defining moment of your lifetime. They are superior in an objective environment, but the human mind is hardly objective.

Boo - oldschool is subjective. Older Mega Man games were better than the newest, because they were well made and it was a fresh style. Same with Zelda. Same with Mario. Newer games in general are not necessarily discluded just because they are new - if they launch a series and a new experience, you are either going to like it or not. Unless they change up the formula just right, though, they are going to eventually either abandon the genre or run it into the ground.

First experiences are usually the best. GoldenEye doesn't really compare to most modern FPS games, but half of the gamers in the world still measure all others to it. It was their first FPS, and it did pretty much everything the new ones do - in many ways more effectively.

I dunno, man. Ghost Babel was done in a very similar style with some changes, yet it's an awesome game.

But, if I recall, that came out after MGS, so I guess it may not count.
