When does a Nintendo game transcend to retro

After 10 years or when the graphics are noticably obsolete?

If you used the second standard, all Wii games would be retro.

When it's two systems lower than the highest one. Hence, N64 to lower and GBC to lower is retro. Well, that's how I see it.

I think three or four systems lower is a better fit. N64 doesn't strike me as retro.

I'd say after a game is about 10 years old. Super Mario 64, Oot, and the like seem kinda retro to me.

SNES was retro in the GC era, N64 should be retro in the Wii era.

It's all based on personal opinion.

I mean, I still barely consider some SNES games retro.

The N64 and back can be considered retro for the purposes of this forum.

Sorry, but it's pretty much undeniable that the Wii's graphic capability is far behind 360/PS3 and high level PCs. It may have an edge elsewhere, but certainly not here.

They may or may not be bad, but they are "noticeably obsolete", which is the standard I was referring to in my original post.

Graphical standards don't come into it at all. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise (is MM9 retro? it is a brand new game, after all).

btw, I really need to be neurotic here: "obsolete" isn't the word you want, either.

I REFUSE to believe that the N64 and Game Boy Color are retro. At all.

That was my point in my first post. The question was whether a game became retro after two generations or after its graphics were "noticeably obsolete".

It's probably safe to say anything two or more generations back is retro. Though I also think it depends a little on the game, to be honest. Some games are born retro. You'd hardly think 'Metal Slug 6' was released just three years ago, going by its sprite-based visuals and hard-as-nails gameplay.

Why not post up something for the Wii like The Conduit, considering it actually implements more modern effects?

How about Red Steel?

Or Oblivion on the 360?

You know a close-up screen of Samus pointed down at the floor isn't the best MP3 has to offer. Here you are, showing off landscape and active objects in the other 2 shots, and Metroid gets a shot at the floor?

Those are still dodgy shots, but that's a bit more comparable.

Now, every game gets its good screenshots. If you walk right up to a wall in Halo 3 and plant your face firmly against the texture, it's not going to be beautiful by any means. In addition to that, if you want to make an argument for a system's graphical capacity, don't use a game that runs on the same engine as the prior GCN titles in the series.

Unfortunately for the Wii, I have to say it hasn't been given a fair shake. Considering graphical detail, though, games like Crysis aren't nearly as expertly rendered as far as artistry is considered when compared to MP3. When people coo over MP3's visuals, it's because they have wrought something beautiful - not because of the game's graphical engine.

I never really noticed any inferiority in the Wii's graphics until someone pointed it out to me.

I was too bust paying attention to, you know, the game.
