What forgotten genre do you like the most?

There are tons of video game genres that have waned as the years go by. I think my most favorite that has lessened quite a bit is a the beatemup/streetbrawler genre. A good majority of it became far too simplified and arcade-oriented, but Double Dragon II was going in a very good direction. Trying to change the formula after that was a mistake, IMO.

Well, as much as I hate to come in and post just to agree with someone, AI's dead on the money IMO. I rather liked the beat-em-up games, and wish they made more for WiiWare/DSiWare or something.

Another genre I'd like to see again is top-down shoot-em-ups (like the special levels in Bionic Commando or Contra). There probably are some like that released recently, but I wouldn't know what is was or where to find it.

Top-down shooters are pretty epic. They're still around in one form or another (like the recent Alien Swarm or whatever it's called that's was made with the Source engine). You could definitely checkout Hunters: the Reckoning on the GCN for some arcade-like mayhem.

My favorite of those has to be Guerrilla, btw. That was SNK's answer to Commando, and while it might not be remembered for its originality, it was seriously a fun game to play.

How is Dead Space Survival Horror?

Me and Jenocide had a conversation about how "Survival Horror" has fallen to the wayside, and has been replaced by "Action Horror"

Emphasis on being helpless of course.

First person shooters. Especially jingoistic war-related games. Whatever happened to those?

There are never console-released rogue-likes.

I would agree with beat-em-ups, top-down shoot-em-ups, and survival horror games.

I also wish there were more sidescrolling run-and-gun type games, sort of like Metal Slug. I also miss MUDs.

Me too. I miss the beat-'em-up games and shooters. Luckily enough, there's a few (freeware) indie games which do the 2D shootin' thing: Cave Story (now on Wiiware!), Action Fist, iji, Noitu Love.

One console game that was surprisingly good was The Red Star. It was a mix of beat-'em-up, run-and-gun shooter, and top-down bullet-hell sh'mup. I recommend.

Also: I'd miss top-down sh'mups if I didn't already have Touhou =p

This. Seriously gaiz, they don't make them like the used to. I just don't feel like it's survival-horror if they give you a whole arsenal of weapons/ammo at your disposal and you feel bad-ass when you're playing.

I too miss the beat-'em-ups... and I feel like I'm the only person that's tired of slow motion fire, heal when you hide, manly-men fps games.

There are a lot of games I'd describe as rogue-like oriented, but I agree.

There's always the arcade-styled Gauntlet clones, at least.

The Penumbra Series

Try it out, it's pretty cool and very convincing.

Yeah, we know about Penumbra. It seems really awesome. I saw some game-play a year or so ago on youtube.

I've been wanting to buy it off Amazon ever since, but haven't gotten around to it.

It's really cheap if you just go for the downloadable version. There's no registration hassles or DRM or anything like that.

I think the second panel would have been funnier without Leon's commentary.

Shadowgate is sincerely an excellent game. If you like it, then you should definitely play Uninvited. It's a stylistic sequel, made by entirely the same folks with the same engine. Just like playing Shadowgate, only more of a modern haunted mansion theme.

Has some great music, too.

There's also Deja Vu, which was clearly made using the same engine. It has a Noir theme, so it's stylistically different, but it plays vastly in the same manner.

The team also recently released "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" recently.

Yeah, I caught wind of the release. I'm interested, but I'd like to play its predecessors through before I spoil myself with the most recent culmination of that play-style.

That said, it's getting really hard to find the time to dedicate to all these games that are tens of hours long. 0_0

I was playing Gunstar Heroes with ML last week. **** was so cash.

Though seriously, Seven Force sucks.

Another fan to add to the beat em up genre, although I was always attracted to the fantasy oriented types a bit more, such as King of Dragons and Knights of the Round. (Golden Axe kicked my ass constantly.)

I do love Vigilante on TG16 though. You have to save Madonna lol.
