There's one thing that does bug me-- and I remember having a conversation with AI about this forever ago-- and that's the fact that TTYD is very lateral in its exploration. Movement is more up and down rather than in and out, whereas PM1 [most notable in levels like the jungle and Bowser's Castle] had towards and away-from exploration, which I prefer gameplaywise. That is a very minor thing, though.

[as in the levels in PM1 had more horizontal depth whereas the levels in TTYD seemed more up-and-down, platfomer-esque]
Yeah, that is pretty minor, especially when you consider some of the awesome out-of-the-box levels that TTYD has, like Glitzville and Excess Express.

Agreed, the plots are pretty straightforward and aren't very complex. At the same time, both games came out at a time when every single contemporary RPG's goal was to Kill God. Something more light-hearted was nice for me (especially since I was 9).

But like I said, the game does feel like a chore at times. And the movement of the characters is pretty slow, but that's worse in the first game because you don't get Lakilester until the second-to-last level. In TTYD, you at least you get Yoshi close to the beginning of the game.

That's part of what doesn't make sense for the series, though. Most SMB games have a huge emphasis on how fast Mario is on his feet. It's another N64-ism that Nintendo had a hard time building large environments worth exploring, so they had to slow it right down in a way that took all the oomph out. That and Yoshi has never really had a history of increasing Mario's speed beside the PM series.

Excess Express ALONE is worth playing TTYD, in my opinion.

Penguin mystery, awesome ruin-like exploration, then bossfight on top of a speeding train. Yes.

...

And then there is Glitzville. Yes. Very yes.

Speedy Spin.

I feel almost ashamed for remembering that.

Tubba Blubba chase music >

With that said, it's hard for me to believe this was 11 years ago.
I agree with the general sentiments, when you break it down, it's not as great as it seemed then. Still a good game, and a great basis for a solid series, TTYD was absolutely the best of the 3 though.

Hated Flower Fields and Crystal Palace (sue me)

That someone is me, by the way.

I don't condone necromancing threads, but I'm all for talking about Paper Mario some more.

Shy Guy's Toy Box will always be my favorite chapter out of the entire series. I don't care how short it was. If they don't bring back Shy Guys for the 3DS game after they've mysteriously faded into the background after the first installment, someone's gonna get a hurtin'.

I'm hoping for a Chain Chomp and Shy Guy partner. I'd also dig a Ninji. And a Lakitu that doesn't suck.

Perhaps they could incorporate a bandit partner that works similarly to Ms. Mowz.

Paper Mario is probably best described as an RPG platformer. Paper Mario is a game that has something for everyone. It's simple to learn and fun for younger gamers, yet complex enough to keep even battle-hardened joystick jockeys playing for weeks. Followers of the Mario craze will be pleased with the recognizable faces and worlds, while RPG fans can rejoice at the thought of one of the deepest and most customizable RPG's to come along for any system in a very long time.
