I would like to see a decent return of the arcade beatem'up style, and not this crap like the new Ninja Turtles games. Please take the time to honor your favorite memories of this genre. There were the big names like Double Dragon and Final Fight, but there were also very many forgotten and equally awesome titles such as P.O.W. ![]() |

I remember the time my pal Jim and I beat 'The Simpsons' at our local arcade. (Classic game--I wonder why they never ported it to the home consoles.) We also played a lot of 'Double Dragon' and 'River City Ransom', but would inevitably just start beating on each other instead of taking out the enemies. My favourite beat-'em-up of all time is probably 'Kung Fu' (assuming that counts). I played it way too much during my childhood--I still hear the music sometimes in my dreams at night. The genre's definitely hit the skids. I mean, Koei's done its level best to keep it going with the 'Dynasty Warriors' series, but, aside from that, the last really good beat-'em-up to come out was 'Dynamite Cop' on the Dreamcast, which was basically the exact same game as 'Die Hard Arcade' on the Saturn. __________________ Boo--beware, he lives |

I'm a firm believer in the X-Men arcade game, btw. Probably the only one I've ever seen badassed enough to house 6 players and 2 screens. Speaking of which, if anyone wants the rom for that, PM me. Another game that was pretty effing sweet, and probably should have been an arcade game was Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage. ![]() |

Slowly button mash through enemy after enemy, always getting pummeled by attacks you can't do jack about. It wasn't a test of my skill, but of how well the buttons on my controller would hold up. ![]() Where are these lemmings going? The Super Nintendo Super Shire! Hop in line and follow them there! |

The 2-player cabinet was likely a conversion kit from something else, is my guess. Final Fight wasn't really the best of fighting games, that's for sure. It was more like a kind of mediocre one made better by its 2-player coop. ![]() |

| Marshmallow Knight ☆ Supermod | I liked Streets of Rage better than Final Fight. SoR had a lot more nuance to it; more varied attacks, etc. Another one I found was The Ninja Warriors (SNES); it was quite the fun romp kicking ass in a ninja-esque way. There were plenty of moves to perform, including throws and strategic ninja jumps in the heat of battle. I find I like this sort of game fun, and yes, it's sad that these games aren't really hot anymore. It's one of those games where you can pick up the game and play, without really worrying about save files or remembering a plot. It's a nice compliment to shmups, wherein both don't really rely on a really long game, just that your skill in playing the same game over and over again (if you so desire). |

And I guess this IS the Retro Nintendo Forum. But nevetheless, you better recognize Konami as the arcade beat-'em-up powerhouse. Edit: Am I the only one who has realized that GOLEM replied to this topic? |

Any decent oldschool player will find it hard to resist the allure of punching random thugs. I think Double Dragon and TMNT are what propelled me into a short-lived career of kenpo karate at the ripe old age of 8 or 9. As for arcade... Well, Konami, Sega, Capcom, and Midway are definitely all titans of the 80's industry. Konami did a fantastic job with their beatem-ups, and even translated some of the same vibe into platforming games like Ninja Gaiden. Back then; I remember most of them were all lumped together as "action" games, much like movies. ![]() |

Many of the older Power Rangers games were beat-em ups. Other than that, Shadow The Hedgehog has SOME beat-em up parts, but that's if you love annhilating everything that moves. Thank goodness I'm only violent in video games, heh. |

There might have been Predators in there too. I can remember how hard the mother Alien (can't remember the name, but it was a huge Alien) was. Anyone ever hear of this? |
