| Guest Posts: n/a | Gameplay: 9/10 Unlike most movie to video games, Batman for NES is actually pretty good. It has a simple weapons concept. Batman has three weapons- Batarang, Pistol, and a rocket launcher of some kind. When none of these weapons are in use, Batman can throw punches. The enemies are easy to kill for the most part. The game has a great AI for the NES, and although some enemies just walk around aimlessly, some can react to the enviroment. For example, some small enemies will move faster when you're near them. Another enemy will slash at you with claws if you get too close. In an earlier stage, a casual smoker on the street will become a vicious ninja when you attempt you walk by. The game has some oddities, though. Even though for the most part the game takes place in the streets of Gotham, the enemies look like something out of a sci-fi movie. Also, you moves more like Spider-Man than Batman. The NES can't handle cape-gliding? Graphics: 10/10 GREAT graphics. In the title screen, there's a cool looking image of Batman, which makes you wonder if it really is the NES you're playing. But it doesn't stop there. The cutscenes have nice looking images of the Batmobile, Batman, and the city. In the actual game, the backgrounds are detailed and multicolored. Batman and the enemies, however, are made up of multiple shades of one color. Oh well... this IS the NES we're talking about. Sound: 8/10 The sound isn't too bad either. If it had been on a more powerful system, the music would sound great. But the sound effects aren't as good. They're real repetitive, and I think I heard only three or four varieties of sounds. Challenge: 8/10 While the enemies are easy to kill, and the continue screen gives you plenty of chances to try again, the stage bosses are tough. Batman can only sustain six hits before he bites the dust, and often, the stage bosses fire multiple projectiles at once. Even though the enemies always drop an item when they die, it usually isn't a health unit, so there aren't a lot of opportunities to regain health. Overall: 9/10 An exellent game. Now, when you play this, don't be expecting a Batman: Vengeance. Just expect a good, Old-skool fighter based on the movie. That's right: it's based on the old 80's movie "Batman." If you set your standards to the "NES games suck" level, you won't be disappointed. |
