IT JUST SUCKED! But Paper Mario is a good game. There's just one thing I should probably mention. If you're expecting an RPG with an involving storyline, memorable characters, and *insert random othewr RPG reference here*, then you'll be dissapointed. Just remember that this is Mario, not Final Fantasy, and you should enjoy yourself. In many way, this game is excellent. The battle system rules. An interesting thing is that you can get "first strikes" on opponents, by either jumping on them, hitting them with a hammer, using Bombette the bob-bomb (hard), or Koopster the koopa troopa. Enemies can also get first strikes on you, which can be avoided with a certain badge (I think, I don't actually own it), Boo, or by simply getting out of the way. What is a first strike, you ask? Whoever gets it gets an extra attack in. Already this game is very Marioistic. I should probably mention that you can use your teammates out of battle. And you can only have one teammate out at a time (you can switch in battle). The focus is on Mario here. If he dies, it's game over. The battle system itself is an expansion of the SMRPG one. This time, time hits are more varied than "push A at the right time." You have to hold down buttons, press the right button quickly, and other stuff. There's a bunch of stuff, and then there's some ather stuff, but I really want to move on, so we'll stop there. The boss battles are also clever and thought out. There's much strategy required (usually), and and some FORCE you to undergo some timed hits. Leveling up is a bit unusual. You only need 100 EXP every time to level up. But EXP is harder to come by this time around. When you're at high levels, defeating low level monsters doesn't give you any EXP. And when you level up, you're a chance to simply expand upon one of your stats. Just one. Leveling up partners is even stranger. You need to find these blocks to level them up. weird. Graphics are... papery. Let's leave it at that. Music is quite good. The tunes are very memorable. Replay Value is high. Whether you're cooking up new items, experiencing the oddly Marioistic gameplay, or collecting badges, there's stuff to do. Anywho, I'll just restate something to finish up this review. If you love Mario, you'll love this. If you want a more Final Fantasy style RPG, get a Playstation. Gameplay: 9/10 Graphics: 7/10 Music/Sound: 9/10 Replay Value: 8/10 Overall: 8.222222222222222 Etc./10 -A Genius (I almost forgot to add my signature (TM).) Pros: Graphics, Buddies are immortal Sound Gameplay Humour ("Goombas are what you call "Small Fries". They're the smallest of fries-oh wait, I'm one of them.") Cons: Slightly recyled Storyline, Really small HP. Best part: Kicking Kammy's Arse. Worst Part: Okay, I know Mario games are intended to be easy, but this one is way too easy. I mean WAY too easy! I mean, I got the 5th star spirit in just a few hours. The next day, I got the remaining star spirits, beat the optional Bosses (Who are really easy, by the way) As well as the game. |
