I used to put up a new review every week. Let's see if I can't start that again. There are a bunch of reviews I want to redo anyway, so this is good. Anyway, Wario Land 3 is the third in my favorite platform series. It takes the innovation in WL2, reuses it so it's not as innovative, but tweaks all the annoying parts of WL2 so it's okay, adds a sort of Metroid like collecting system, only a little stranger and more complicated, puts in a VERY cool golf game, and a cool looking but pathetic final boss (think Master Hand in Super Smash Bros. (not Melee)), and that's Wario Land 3 in a nutshell. The immortality system, used again in this game, has lots of new cool stuff. As in Wario Land 2, Wario can't die, and getting hit by enemies causes you to either get knocked back with a little "AaAhhhhHHh!" Noise, or causes you to transform. There are a lot of new transformations in this game, such as Snowball Wario, Invisible Wario, and, my favorite, Vampire Wario, who I'll dedicate a paaragraph to later. Most of the old transformations are back, except tiny Wario, and Crazy Wario isn't fun to play as anymore. When bitten by a vampire, Wario turns into a vampire. As a vampire, he can move really fast, and if you press and hold A, he can jump around by pressing right and left on the control pad. That doesn't sound too special, but it's fun to play around with. Really. AND, by pressing B, he can turn into a bat and fly around! Flying is pretty typical, press a a whole bunch of times, that's basically it. In Wario Land 4, Bat Wario is all that's availible, which sucks. Progressing through the levels is a bit like progressing through the endless corridors in the Metroid games. It's not as tricky, since you can go to this temple place to find out where you go next, but if you choose to ignore the temple, just for fun, it's not too different. You gain new abilities as the game progresses, eventually restoring the powers you had in WL2, and gaining a brand new one, which is pretty dang cool. You'll gain a lot of tresures, most of which change the level style in some way. Sometimes you'll need more than one tresure for any effect to take place. And the golf minigame, damnit the GOLF MINIGAME RULES. Sometimes, you'll need to play a challenging little game of 2-D golf in order to progress through a part of the level. As in a real game of golf, there are sandtraps, ponds, patches of tall grass, and lava pits blocking the way. You play by presing A while a little thingy goes up a meter, and the higher it goes, the farther the ball will go, but that's not all, the thingy will come back down, and when it's near the bottom of the meter, where a few oddly colored points are, you press A to determinew what kind of stroke you use. If you didn't quite get that, don't worry. I did a bad job explaining it. You just have to play it. For a "minigame", it's pretty advanced. My biggest problem with this game is that it's TOO EASY. It's not at all difficult to complete the game and get all 100 treasures, and... and... and... I can't think of a good way to end this paragraph. So... what's up with Waluigi? He's annoying, he has a stupid name, and he doesn't even have a real personality. Those morons at Nintendo... I loved the music, the ending theme is particularily good, and the final boss music is cool, and I found myself humming a few of the level themes, it's cool. Graphics are good, but there is a problem. They reused the Wario sprite form the second game. It's been recolored, and Wario is MUCH better animated, but it's true. Everything else, though, is awesome. Replay value is hard to rate. The hundred treasures are not particularily hard to find, but the musical coins are. Did I mention the musical coins? There are 8 in each level. When you find all the coins in the game, you get a reward. Anyway, the musical coins are very hard to find, and there's a time attack mode to conquer, and I found myself just playing the game over and over, so I guess replay is pretty good. Overall, this is probably my favorite GBC game (that I've played). If you liked Wario Land 2, you might love this. Or, you might not. I'm not sure, exactly, but I loved this. Gameplay: 9/10 Graphics: 8/10 Music: 9/10 Replay: 7.5/10 Overall: 8.375/10 -A Genius (Woot.) |
