Shining Force started the shining series (Actually, I think Shining in the Darkness did but this game became the most overrated game until Final Fantasy 7). And those idiots who say "omg!!!11 shining fors si teh best geness gam evar!!111" have OBVIOUSLY left out Phantasy Star II and IV as well as the Sonic games.

Graphics: 2/10
HOLY COW MAN!! What on EARTH were the people at Sega sniffing when they designed it? The Dark Dragon doesn't even look like a Dragon (Looks more like my sister's boyfriend if you ask me.) and the backgrounds make you want to put a black cloth over the TV or to do ANYTHING to make it stop.

Sound: 0/10
MAKE IT STOP PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!! Is this supposed to be MUSIC?! Come on Sega! You can do better than that! Even if Sega had taken a Hot Iron and begun to beat a cat with it, the sounds made by this cat definatly beat the crap out of the music this game features.

Control: 0/10
The control's simple. To attack, you must hit the X button, move forward, hit the X button 38 times, then flip the controller, then hit the B button, then the A button, then move backwards. then flip the controller again, then move left, then hit the Y, X, and A buttons at the same time twice, then repeat it all backward. Oh wait, that's the controls to have your characters move in battle. Attacking doesn't even use the Y button.
(Point is: the control is awful crap)

Replay value: -10/10
Good lord who's gonna wanna replay this?! You'd need to be one of those morons who think this game is gold to

Overall: 0/10
This game is the exact opposite of Fire Emblem. Fire Emblem rules and this game sucks, and Fire Emblem is a much better buy (Even Phantasy Star III is a much better buy, and that game sucked horribly, but not as much as this one did). And this game is obviously the 2nd most overrated game of all time (It's even more overrated than Final Fantasy X, but no game can beat how overrated Final Fantasy 7 is, and people wonder why I don't like those games at all)

P.S Shining Force 2 and Shining in the Darkness are alot better, get those and don't play this game. You will die.

Thumbs down

Shining Force did indeed suck, but Shining Force 2 and Shining in the Darkness are infinetly better, and I think that Shining the Holy Ark is the best one in the series. If you have a saturn, then you MUST get that game. If you have a Genesis, do NOT get this game. It sucks.

Thumbs up

A18 and Andross get bear hugs and boxes of chocolate chip cookies as well.

I wrote a 3,000 word review for GameFAQs that got trashed by a bunch of people who couldn't seem to come up with a decent reason that it sucks aside from "It's not Fire Emblem, so quit comparing it to it" and "It's too long.". Sure, it's not Fire Emblem. It's too crappy to even hold a candle to the masterpiece known as Fire Emblem. And so what if it's long? There's lots of problems with it.

Here's a rundown of why I didn't like it:

- The AI's IQ doesn't reach room temperature. Even the final boss was dumb as a rock.

- When the enemies aren't being stupid, they're being cheap.

- Awful battleground setup. It's unimaginative, belongs in a regular RPG where you don't need to position yourself to fight enemies (except Inindo), and doesn't seem to do anything to help the amount of intelligence needed to play the game. One's a giant field, totally vacant except for the rocks/trees bordering it. Wow.

- Half the characters are impossible to use. They can't do much of anything, and enemies kill them in a couple of hits. Near the end of the game, I had Zylo at Lv. 20, promoted at 13. That totals about Lv. 33. Suddenly, I get a mage and a healer who were at Lv. 10 unpromoted.

- If you die, you just come right back.

- Overall graphics look like something out of a desktop theme.

- Terrible attack animations. What is the unpromoted Gong doing, anyway?

- Almost everybody is a pallete swap or somebody else. Pallete swaps I don't mind. But when they did it the way this game did, it starts to anger me.

- Attacks consume WAY too much MP. Heal 4 costs about 20 MP but Gong only has 35.

- Music that either makes me want to send the controller through the speakers, or sounds like something out of a dramatic circus act. The final boss' arena music did not give me the feeling I was saving the world; it made me feel like I was smashing a giant circus puppet.

- The plot's holey as Puritan lifestyle. The game never does say why Darksol was trying to revive Dark Dragon.

- Awful character development. I believe Zylo (who's actually the only reason I played this game long enough to finish it) has two lines in the entire game.

- The annoying "Manually giving others extra items" and "pulling up a menu just to talk to somebody".

- "Dark Dragon" sounds like a rejected Mega Man boss.

^Yeah, Not only is Dark Dragon overused (They call Zog the Dark dragon in Breath of Fire, and wasn't a Dark Dragon in Fire Emblem?), but it sounds too boring. It needs originality, You won't see that "Chaos" isn't the final boss of FF9 (Despite the simularity), they instead called "Necron" Though if you ask me, Darkness is overused. (Probably because Ansem says Darkness and Heart every 10 seconds at the end of Kingdom Hearts) But they at least fixed most of the major flaws in Shining Force 2, because the Final boss's IQ is over 20.

^ I belive the Fire Emblem dark dragon had an actual name (it says the dragon's name in Marth's profile in Smash Brothers Melee, but I don't remember it). The overall concept of a dark dragon is overused, but when you actually call your dark dragon "Dark Dragon" when he doesn't even look ANYTHING like a dragon, it's obvious somebody's trying to squeeze blood from a rock.

And I agree the overall concept of "Light fights dark" is also terribly overused. And so is the "Bad guys are immortal and are revived every thousand years".

Didn't Shining Soul have a Dark Dragon? I had a RoM but I was too bored to play through it so I deleted it. (The only thing you do in Shining Soul is just hit A over and over again like the Episode plots in Pokemon.)

The dark dragon in FE is named Medius.

If that's the case, I wouldn't mind fighting Alvis and Yurius in the year 1776 in a Shining force game .
