Exclamation Yasunori Mitsuda, composer for CT...

will be working on Smash Bros. Brawl! do you know what this means?! this means that there might be a very slim chance that one of the characters from CT might get into brawl!

That's damn near all of my favorite gaming composers....except for Masaharu Iwata, Hitoshi Sakimoto, and Hayato Matsuo. And Nobou Uematsu. And Ko Otani.

But you can't have everything. This is one of the best lineups of composers ever. Probably the best in videogame history.

I don't think this is actually the place for that kind of debate, but no, you're blazingly, almost staggeringly wrong.

Wyborn's right. Uematsu's better.

Actually, it's also missing my personal favorite composer, Tomohito Nishiura (Dark Cloud series, Rogue Galaxy, everything else Level 5 s doing). Although, I have no idea why he'd be in a Nintendo game.

Still, yeah, its good to have Mitsuda at least. And several other really great composers. They even have Shimomura! Awesome.

Isn't Uematsu doing the theme song anyway?

My real belief is this: Uematsu can crunch out better stuff on average, but Mitsuda's absolute best songs are better than anything Uematsu can churn out. -CSM

If you believe that Uematsu's body of work is better than Mitsuda's, you believe that he is the better composer. It's not complicated.

Though you're wrong on that front, even. The best of Uematsu's works (like Dancing Mad in all of its movements, and the FF6 end theme) blows anything Mitsuda ever wrote out of the water. Uematsu's mastery of liet motif is something to make pretty much any other game composer weep. There's no contest.

And Uematsu already wrote a theme for one of the trailers, but apparently he's not doing anything else, which is a shame. Damn shame.

It'd be interesting if David Wise worked on it too, but he hasn't done anything I liked since DKC2. And, again, he wouldn't do anything for Nintendo since Rare went over to Microsoft.

Also, Uematsu is the mad genius behind my favorite soundtrack, FFIX. With masterpieces like Jesters of the Moon and Beatrix's theme, I find it hard to believe that anyone is better.

^^Hmm, well, you have a point in a couple of those songs. However, Uematsu's list of good songs goes on for miles.

Examples:
Prelude
Jesters of the Moon
Melodies of Life
Dancing Mad
The Petrified Forest (It's been so long since I was at that point in the game I've forgotten the real name.)
Gizamaluke Grotto (Seriously awesome)
Kuja and Garland's themes
ANY FF battle music, really.
Any boss music (especially FF4).
One-Winged Angel (Sue me. Hate the character, like the song.)
J-E-N-O-V-A (Another song I like from that game)

And, if Chrono Trigger's your thing, Uematsu composed Sealed Door, my personal favorite from that game.

And that's only the tip of the iceburg, not even the best of the best. In fact, when you mention Mitsuda, only the Magus theme, To Far Away Times, and Small Two of Pieces Restored comes to mind, along with possibly Magical Dreamers. He also did an excellent remix of the Rogue Galaxy theme. Otherwise, he isn't nearly as good as Uematsu in my opinion, and that's that.

I'd prefer not to start a war, so please accept this as my opinion and leave it at that.

No, CSM is right. The rest of you are simply wrong. Mitsuda >>>>> Uematsu. Sorry. But it's true.

The combined soundtracks of Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears destroy Uematsu utterly.

Personally, I think Uematsu peaked at FF8. FF6 and FF7 had some great tracks, the rest of the music in the games he has done have been (to me) forgettable.

FF8 is definitely a great soundtrack though. I love it. I could listen to it nonstop, all of the way through. The rest of his games? Eh, not so much. Maybe a track here or there, but not a complete package.

And please, I could name Mitsuda songs all day. Namely, the entire CT/CC/XG soundtracks.

(Not to forget his non-video game soundtracks which are awesome: Kirite and Sailing to the World.)

But like I said, I could listen to all of Mitsuda's CDs nonstop.

So yeah, Mitsuda wins.

(Forgetting the fact that they're simply both damn great composers. And it's all about personal preference. Me, I love celtish and string music, so Mitsuda is the man.)

Anyway, this is awesome news. Mitsuda is a damn fine composer.-jay

(As an aside, Dear Lord, I can't wait until SSBB comes out. I so friggen can't wait to play as Metaknight.)

Man, Jay spent about five times his normal amount of words just expunging on how very wrong he is about videogame music. It's mind-blowing.

I'll get into a contest with you, Jay. You name any Mitsuda song you want - any one - and I will name a Uematsu song that stomps it into the ground. It's like a list-war only more organized.

Oh, this is why I love stupid internet debates. People can argue their opinion to the death like it is fact. I love them so much.

(Wait, no I don't.)

Anyway, I'm going to go listen to the Chrono Trigger soundtrack and get some actual productive real work done. You can screw around with your free time however you want.-jay

(By the way, Mitsuda >>>>> Uematsu)

(See! This is what I love about these debates. I can say that as many times as I want, and still be right.)

Actually, Jay, since you brought up the idea that internet debates are fallacious because of the simple fact that they are arguing opinions (even if we want to ignore the fact that Uematsu's library of music is larger, more varied, and more well-received so by general consensus you are wrong), I'm going to bring up the fact that you can't be inherently "right" when you state an opinion, and irony that appears to be lost on your last statement, much less your refusal to continue this discussion.

As this is true - and more, you've admitted to such even while working against it - the idea that Mitsuda is better than Uematsu is intellectually and logically bankrupt. And more than that, you and CS are the only ones to throw out the idea of one composer being empirically better than the other over and over - I have said this only once, and that in reference to specific songs of Uematsu's being peerless when compared to any of Mitsuda's, a position much easier to actually defend. As such, your argument, part of a debate initiated by your perspective, is destroyed by the points that you make yourself. Repeating the idea that Matsuda is Uematsu's superior is just compounding the folly.

I can forgive that - I can't forgive wussing out on a friendly internet fight and running away from the conversation. You actually robbed something this stupid of the fun.

I can't believe it, Jay.

You actually managed to lose an internet argument.

And you're still wrong.

Wow, they got Yasunori Mitsuda? I'm impressed. Someone should talk them over into remixing the "Dragon God"-battle theme and the "Faraway promise" or whatever the track at the end of CC was...After World Revolution.

EDIT: Err...I think I just walked into this thread at the wrong time...*Hides in a bomb shelter*
