This.

I ****ing hate random encounters. However, it's all a part of a genre I'm a huge fan of, so I've come to just sort of accept them over the years.

In a game like Dark Cloud, where the encounters are planned and you get to fight real-time, I'm willing to **** everyone's **** up and my weapons end-game are usually through the roof stats-wise. Adversely, in Rogue Galaxy and Star Ocean and stuff like that, the random encounters were real-time, so I didn't mind them as much either. I suppose it's just the tediousness of turn-based random encounters that annoys me.

Random encounters aren't that annoying if you get lucky enough...or if the game doesn't have a really high random encounter rate.

Perhaps the worst was Breath of Fire III and Xenogears...but mostly the former. UGH. It really bothered me and I only remember fighting in like 50% of the random encounters I fought in Breath of Fire III and still being high-enough to pwn Myria.

I don't mind a ton of random encounters if I'm getting enough EXP to level up every 5-10 battles or if they all give me a huge amount of money/items. I start to get annoyed when the EXP system inevitably breaks and I get stuck fighting mildly difficult 1 EXP battles that drop no items or gold and are against enemies fast enough that I can't run.

^^Yeah, BoF III's random encounters are ****ing ridiculous. I remember near the beginning where you have to solve that one puzzle with the tombstones, and you ran into a damned enemy every other step. I actually went to the trouble of getting the hidden treasure, so I was in there for a solid two hours of half-wasted time. D:
