Chrono Trigger was developed by a "Dream Team" with developers from rivals Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest to create the greatest game in the world; even though you have the same people working in the newly merged company now, they're fifteen years older and they not looking to make the greatest game in the world, they're making a Chrono Trigger sidedish.

Well, the Dream Team needs to be involved, but let's say they died or something, would we just forfeit the possibility of a C game? Hopefully not.

I'd hope that we get some new IP, some new characters to care about. Really, what would the point of having more Chrono Trigger? If you have to bend your game to fit it into the Chrono umbrella, I think it'd make it a worse game.

On the other hand, the fanboy in me yearns for more of the same, only better. But there aren't a lot of examples where a good game comes out, and a sequel comes along that I think is a better game.

Or maybe a full-fledged sequel? Chrono Cross was apparently "not a sequel".

Chrono Trigger and its associated things remind me of what happened with Sonic: It started out with the best of intentions, but ultimately got discarded. Of course, it had a different course--Sonic got bad games, Chrono Trigger got (arguably) one bad game and then sat there. Well, there was the DS remake.

Yeah, except Chrono Trigger was the best of the best. Sonic was just another half-decent platformer.

Chrono and Sonic both have ridiculously spiky hair, though. Clearly, this seemingly irrelevant fact is actually very significant.

I don't understand the acclaim for Chrono Cross. Everything about it that made it different from other RPGs was kind of bad:
  • 50 characters? That does not give me a lot of time to get to know them all and care about them.
  • Battle system? Slow and painful. Random misses all of the time. Limited amount of spells. The cool part about Chrono Trigger was the Dual and Triple techs; only two or three multitechs are in Chrono Cross at all, and I had to look those up.
  • Alternate world system? Done better by Trigger (and those Zelda games).
  • Storyline? Confusing, hackneyed, and shoved Chrono et al. just for fanservice.

If anyone's played the DS version of Chrono Trigger, you'll know that the add-on stuff is garbage compared to the original meat of the game. Replaying it again recently, I've noticed that Trigger is not the flawless masterpiece that stood in my mind, but it's still the best. I fear that if there's another 'sequel', it'll just be a crap fest. There's no reason to extend the Chrono series, except for pure marketing reasons.

Let's not also forget one thing, Ace. In order to get the best ending where Schala (Her actress declined - so they hired the girl who later on went to play Namine for her)is released from Lavos...you have to KNOW what to do and it's more or less a Guide Dang It moment. Now how on earth would you know to get the elements in that particular order instead of actually killing the time devourer?

And the story really could have been done better. It was just confusing and I didn't exactly get what was going on until Wikipedia.

That's not fair to say, "Oh, CT did it better so it sucked." Nothing is going to match CT, not CC, or CB, but a great new game just merely set in the CT universe is all I'm asking for, personally. They can tie up some loose ends, but that's all I'd expect, along with the real meat of the game being a new story (kinda like FF4: The After Years).

I liked the new ending, aside from, I believe, a typo or something else I caught. The other added stuff was just "neat" I suppose, like walking via stylus.

Of course not, and play Super Mario Bros. again and then turn it off after taking the Warp Pipes, or dying once, or just after five straight minutes of playing. What needs to be done is a full REMAKE. The game is a rusty old bastard; flawless, but not timeless.

What sort of loose ends are you talking about? None really come to mind; Lucca's orphanage maybe? I admit, though, fanboy in me would love a new Chrono game,

A remake of CT would not be good as a completely new game, it would be redundant. There's the argument that it makes it more accessible to new players, but to hell with them; they're not me and I'm greedy. If I had the choice between buying a game I've played or a new game, I'll take the new one.

That's where my comparison comes from--if you take CC as junk, then you can just as accurately say the Chrono series has lost its original spark and is prone to being mangled by people who don't understand it.

I found the addons to the DS version to be garbage. The dungeons were very repetative and boring; you had to keep backtracking five times in a row. -CSM

...And the add-ons sucking would further my comparison, although I would note that it's just a hypothetical idea--the one that Chrono series stuff has sort of fallen in a ditch and isn't interested in climbing out.

It's possible to make another great Chrono game, just like it's possible to run pretty good with a crutch.

It just would take finesse.

But with the Square Enix team mostly being people who make stuff like that new Final Fantasy in the FF7 ripoff, I don't believe they have it in them anymore. >.>

I hate CC. It made me like CT less...then I just played CT again and cleansed my palette.

I'd love another Chrono Game, honestly. And I'd buy it for sure. Whether it's good or not is up to the the designers, but I'll stay hopeful.

Also, I don't think the announcement is for a game.

A few of the loose ends I referenced include:

What happened to Robo/Magus/Frog/Ayla after the defeat of Lavos and return to their own time periods (especially Robo).

Details on the fall of Guardia and marriage of Marle and Crono.
-----------------------------------------------------------

That's just a couple I thought up while excluding CC, I could really dig for some more if I wanted to.

You know, I think they intentionally left that open. We view the world from Crono, Marle, and Lucca's "Present." Once the time traveling is done, they have no more insight into the past or future than we do. They no longer know what has happened to their friends. It's all purely speculation. To let us view what happened to them after they're gone is to overstep our boundaries. The past is left to the past and the future to the future. It is time for them to focus on the present.

^ I actually think that is a good reason to make a sequel.
